Goldfish Eulogy By John McMenamin Wee Nellie, lay upon her bed And cried and cried and cried Her goldfish called wee Moby Dick Had gave a gulp and died
“Oh Mammy’ carried wee Nellie He was my only chum He was upside down this morning I could see his little tum.” “I’ll never marry” Nellie sobbed “I’m past my self by date Wee Moby Dick was my wee friend A pal, a chum a mate” Her mum stood at the cooker As her daughter rambled on Thinking of the goldfish bowl That she was going to pawn. “Ah, Moby Dick” cried Nellie “Why did you have to go? “I’d look into your bulging eyes And smile and say-hello” “I’ll buy a tombstone” Nellie cried “Made from granite, black and thick A gold inscription on the front Goodbye my little Dick” “I’ll pick wild flowers in the dew In memory of his name Without my little aquatic friend My life won’t be the same” “I loved you Moby” Nellie screamed “Like I’ve never loved a male Your golden scales. Your little fins The way you flapped your tail Her mother at the cooker Grunted with a smokers wheeze “Do you want this goldfish served with chips? And a few nice mushy peas?” “GULP”
