Group 1
‘Oh, this is the biggest mix-up that you have ever seen, My father he was Orange, and my mother, she was Green. Baptised by Father Murphy…’
It’s strange how a small idea can flourish and grow. It started as a small group of women from Springhill Community House, expanding to a cross-community project involving women from across the divide. The project was devised to show the mirror image of both communities. We would show this through looking at two rival football groups - Rangers and Celtic.
Group 2
How do you feel, with all these Rangers supporters walking by you?
Embarrassed.
Embarrassed? Do you get any insults or remarks made to you?
No.
No? Feel quite happy? You’re quite safe? Who’s going to win today between Rangers and Aberdeen?
Aberdeen. I go along, I support Rangers.
Oh you support Rangers? This is your friend - so youse are actually friends and you’re a Rangers supporter and you’re a Celtic supporter?
And so does she, Rangers.
Group 3
What colour’s your top? ORANGE!
Who do you support? RANGERS!
Who’s going to win? RANGERS!
Who do you hate? CELTIC!
(Singing…)
‘Hail, hail, the Celts are here
What the hell do we care,
What the hell do we care?’
Group 4
A few lads, I mean, they can be the other side, they can… - a bit of banter: they take a slagging but they get enough…
What sort of things do you say to each other like?
Youse got ***** beat, youse *****” - that’s what I’d say to them.
Group 5
My friends are Celtic supporters.
It doesn’t bother you?
No.
What kind of… what would youse… would youse ever talk about football?
We went away and watched the Scottish Cup Final together. Right. Would there be joking? What kind of jokes would youse give off to each other?
What kind of jokes?
Yeah. You know, banter and stuff.
Och, you just keep them going, would you not, about their teams, saying 6
Anybody with a real IQ can tell that there’s no difference they’re crap, and they would say the exact same to you.”
Group - only but the colours and only but the football team.
That’s right. The supporters are all the same - it’s just the colours that makes the difference.
