I come from a Catholic background, I’ve lived all my life in the Bogside and I still live there. The Bogside Artists is a small group of three artists. I would be the spokesman for the group. We have a definite vision and goal. We know where we come from, we know who we are, and we know, more importantly, where we’re going. We have covered the key events like Bloody Sunday, the Battle of Bogside, the hunger strike, the killing of children, and we’re moving towards more colourful, bright, breezy type murals full of energy and light. Because those murals will be reflecting the future and the hopes and dreams of the young people of the Bogside. So they will contrast with the murals that we’ve already done which depict the images from the past. The majority of the murals are painted in black and white so that people can understand that it really was history and that we must move away from it. I have been functioning as tutor for the week amongst the students from the different colleges and schools that are working together on this project. I would probably be seen as a muralist coming from the Catholic community and to balance that up, they have Marty Edwards from the Waterside, seen as an artist from the Protestant community, working alongside Gilberto, the artist from South America, and then you’ve got the students from again, mixed schools - Protestant and Catholic. But I don’t think anybody’s you know, conscious of who comes from where and what religious background they’re from. And, as I say, it’s all a very positive project altogether. Trying to create other than destroy, and to build up other than drag down, and it’s all very, very, very positive and very enjoyable. People are thinking beyond Ireland, beyond Northern Ireland, beyond Derry, and they’re thinking, you know, less parochial and thinking more international. I think sometimes we tend to be very insular and, you know, very introverted, and therefore it’s a positive thing to be thinking in terms of South America and I think the young people have really benefited from that as well.
