Video Nation History

Find out how it all started.
FACTS

In 1993 Chris Mohr and Mandy Rose of the Community Programmes Unit started Video Nation, using a series of cameras distributed across the UK.

More than 10,000 tapes were shot and sent into the BBC, from which approximately 1300 shorts were edited and shown on television.

Video Nation came off-air in June 2000 and Chris Mohr started working with the BFI (British Film Institute) to archive the 1,300 shorts and 10,000 rushes.

It soon became apparent that the archive was too good to leave collecting dust - the idea of Video Nation Online was born.

Video Nation is for everyone. Any age, any background, anyone. It's your platform to tell your story in your words.

It's an opportunity to put your views and experiences on camera and share them with the whole community. It's also a chance to add your videos to a growing, national, online archive.

Film making experience

You don't need a camcorder of your own or any previous experience of filming, and it doesn’t matter what your age or circumstances are - we can give you all the help you need.

Your film will edited into a short video (approx 2 minutes) by us and streamed on this website. But, if you don’t like the end result, it won’t get shown. Simple as that!

No scripts

We'll provide the camera and all the help you need, you provide the story. It's entirely up to you what you would like to share about your life on film.

Video Nation is about the ordinary lives of people who live in Norfolk. What's important to you? What do you feel passionate about? What makes you mad? What makes you cry?

From faith to food, share it here with others on Video Nation Norfolk.

Take a look at films from around the UK other people have made.
