The large granary with loading gantry visible in this picture was built in 1903 but Wells' history as a port goes back to Tudor times. Whelk and shrimp boats can still be seen in the harbour as this is still a working port. The granary, though has now been converted into luxury flats. Despite the town's name, the open sea is about a mile from the quay. It can be reached by walking along a causeway which runs parallel to the main shipping channel. The town itself has several pretty winding streets, with some surviving Victorian and Edwardian shop fronts.
