As she broadcasts her weekly drum 'n' bass selection live from the 1Xtra tour bus, DJ Flight has an aura of calm about her, casually blending beats as if it's a regular night. Outside the bus however, the feeling is very different: an excited crowd prepares for an evening co-hosted by 1Xtra and Norwich’s resident drum 'n' bass promoters, Bounce. Excitement has been rippling through Norwich ever since the announcement that the city's Lava And Ignite venue would host part of 1Xtra’s Six Cities – Six Nights – Six Raves crusade. Pendulum's upwards swing Tonight, that excitement peaked, not least because of Pendulum’s return to Norwich. The last few months have seen the phenomenal rise of this Australian drum 'n' bass act. Leaping from underground tape packs to the top 40 singles chart, they took a Neil Armstrong-esque step for the genre. With their tweaking of The Prodigy’s Voodoo People they've rejuvenated its anarchic energy, giving the track a new pulsing edge which repeats what the song did 10 years ago when it originally bruised the UK dance scene. Pendulum may have spent the last year expanding into new territory, but as they take to the club’s decks tonight, you could be forgiven for thinking Norwich is a new conquest. Dark basslines Opening with a tide of energy and enthusiasm, basslines dark and thick yet fluid – viscous perhaps – they couple beatmixing with flair and character, and still keep its pounding techstep edge. On the stage, MC Eksman has an almost evangelical quality as he excites the crowd at his command. But perhaps the success of Pendulum can be attributed to the wide audience they’ve attracted. With such a diversity of admirers, no-one’s sure whether the future for Pendulum will be superclubs and chart success or film soundtracks and car ads. DJ Flight soars As their explosive set finishes, it’s time for Ignite to experience DJ Flight. | | DJ Flight has a tight grip on music! |
Or, considering the intensity of the atmosphere at Pendulum’s departure, perhaps that should be the other way around – for DJ Flight to experience Ignite. But swapping the crimson décor of the tour bus for more frenzied surroundings doesn’t vex her. As she announces that Ignite is now live on 1Xtra, the crowd lets out an impressive yet inevitable cheer. But as Flight unleashes her first track, clubbers need no prompt to respond, stabbing their hands into the air and bouncing to her jungle rhythms. Fabio's fresh set For the final set, BBC Radio 1’s drum 'n' bass pioneer Fabio delivers. The connoisseur of beats and breaks has been mesmerising dance floors for more than a decade, but his set tonight feels remarkably fresh, capturing the evolutionary spirit of drum 'n' bass. As the night closes, ravers scan the flyers announcing the next event organised by the promoters. Tonight has been a huge success which has proven that Bounce, Norwich’s homegrown drum 'n' bass night, is respected by many of the scene's major players. If the growth of Bounce can mirror the surge of Pendulum, then the club scene in Norwich could be about to get very exciting. |
