DJ Tags had the crowd spellbound

Deck Effex at Mustard

A new hip-hop night has started bouncing into Norwich once a month, which is awash with skilful DJs cutting together perky beats with groove-laden samples as well as MCs revealing their rhymes, writes Tim Fielding.

It was clear this was going to be a great night when I walked through Mustard's doors.

Tim Fielding gives the night 4 out of 5 stars.

The intimate venue was packed with hip-hop lovers nodding their heads and shaking a leg to the sounds being laid down by organisers and warm-up DJs Muddle and Logan.

Playing a mix of underground and classic tunes, the two DJs injected plenty of life into the crowd. Ipswich-based host Truth supplied the vocals, giving the crowd a taste of what was in store.

I was struck by the lack of attitude which can characterise hip-hop nights. The crowd was friendly and refreshingly it seemed everyone was there to have a great night.

Skilful DJs

Aside from friendly clubbers, the highlight was when turntablist crew Fully Grown Men stepped up to the decks. The crew is made up of local DJs Tags, Hungry Ghost and Ju-e.

They each had a turntable and a mixer combined with other gadgetry to loop beats and samples. I had no idea what to expect from these guys, but I was blown away by their innovation.

It was all hands on decks madness. With each DJ scratching different samples and beats and adding layer on layer of sound, they created complete tracks live.

Starting out with funky hip-hop beats which flourished into darker dirtier tracks, their fluid sound was unique and inspiring.

The skilful cascade of beats had the effect of a stun gun as clubbers stopped dancing to stand and watch in awe as the DJs cut up the grooves.

Slick rhymes

Off the back of the Fully Grown Men set, Norwich MC DPF stepped up to perform his tunes. His witty and slick rhymes were interwoven into rousing grooves - it was impossible to keep still!

MC DPF delivered slick rhymes.

The crowd gathered round to watch, with many punters singing along to his rhymes, which provided an inspiring warm-up for the open mic session where a bevy of young local MCs took their turn to give their best.

All the MCs were talented, but the highlight was Fully Grown Men. I have seen plenty of scratch DJs in the past, but this crew delivered something fresh and new, and judging from the crowd's reaction, other clubbers agreed.

At Deck Effex I've discovered a cracking night crammed with friendly hip-hop lovers - and I will be going along again.

Deck Effex takes place on the first Thursday of each month at Mustard, above Imagine, All Saints Green, Norwich.

It's great to finally have a regular hip hop night in Norwich to acknowledge those of us in the minority that have tastes other than the mainstream. It's even better to see reviews of the event on a massive website like the BBC ... I'm sorry to have missed the fist night but will now be watching the website for news of future events. Tnks!
Lil' Mo.

Was a great night. I really enjoyed the night espec the beats from all the djs - loving the mix of UK and US and this proves Hip-Hop ain't all gals and guns - even though as a gal i really loved my time. Thanks DFX.
