Name: Michael Saunders. Age: 18 – I have the same birthday as Stephen Malkmus (from Pavement – you should check them out) Born: 30 May 1987, in James Paget Hospital. I think I went to Rome when I was still an embryo. Occupation: I work at the Gorleston Library, and I used to cut grass at some dog kennels, on one of those sit-down lawn mowers. It was fun, until I got the wheels stuck in a lot of... well, a lot of waste you would find at a dog kennels. Lovely. Interests My main interest is music, and I'm always trying to find new music and bands to feed my hunger. As an unfortunate by-product of this, not a lot of people have heard of the bands I like, even though they should, as they're amazing. I like a wide range of music, including, but not limited to: - Post-Rock like Godspeed You! Black Emperor (as well as all their side projects), Meanwhile, Back In Communist Russia and Mono.
- Shoegazer like My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive and the new generation of shoegazers like Sennen.
- Electronica like Four Tet, Autechre and Boards Of Canada.
- Indie like Broken Social Scene, Pavement and Deerhoof.
- Experimental hip-hop, like cLOUDDEAD, Prefuse 73 and Aesop Rock.

I'm also into films, especially independent films and directors like Harmony Korine, Jim Jarmusch and Wes Anderson and I'm a big fan of the Dogme 95 movement. Dave Eggers is my favourite author. I'd recommend some of the short stories by other authors on his own publishing company's website, McSweeney's. Interesting fact about me My great great great (etc.) grandmother was washed up on Winterton beach tied to a mast and was the only survivor of an unknown boat from an unknown location. She had a birthmark shaped like a fish on her stomach, and the suspicious people of the time gave this as the reason she survived. Lots of her descendants also had fish-shaped birthmarks in various places on their stomachs and backs, including my dad, adding to those superstitious beliefs...(ooohhh). Best Moment Not long ago I saw Sigur Rós at the Olympia in Paris, which is probably one of my best moments. They're Icelandic, and sing in both Icelandic and their own made-up language called Hopelandish and that was amazing to see live. Aspiration Me and a friend have always dreamed of opening a place combining a record shop, book shop, live music venue and art house cinema. With its own magazine. It's nice to dream. Hates There aren't many things I hate. Although I do hate iPods. Seriously, don't ask me about iPods if you just want a light conversation. What I'll be doing for Blast I hope to write lots of interviews and articles on a variety of topics including music, film, drama, art and writing. I hope to bring more attention to some of the county's lesser known bands and events, as well as to get more in touch with creative scene in Norfolk, so I can bring you the most interesting info on things I'm sure you'll enjoy. |
