Barbie (2023)

Barbie went straight to the top of the box office with this summer blockbuster
One of the most famous films based on a toy has to be Barbie, which made over a billion dollars at the cinema.
Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the main character versions of Barbie and Ken, the film was a huge hit with audiences around the world.
The first ever Barbie doll was made back in 1959, with creator Ruth Handler naming the toy after her daughter Barbara.
2023's movie might be the biggest, but there's been more than 40 Barbie films to date, most of them animations released outside the cinema.
The dolls have also featured in one of the most famous film series of all time - keep reading to find out more...
The Lego movies (2014 - 2019)

The Lego toys had four movies released over five years
The building block toys got their own cinema series over ten years ago when The Lego Movie first came out in 2014, followed by a sequel in 2019.
There were also spin-offs like The Lego Batman Movie and The Lego Ninjago Movie.
Writers and directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who played a big part in the main films, are also behind the Spider-Man: Spider-Verse series.
Even though there's no plans for more of these movies, lots of Lego fans love to make their own animations at home, called 'brickfilms'.
Transformers One (2024)

The film saw the toys feature in an animated adventure
The newest Transformers film came out a couple of years ago and starred famous actors like Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson, who you might know from the Marvel movies.
It was directed by the person behind Toy Story 4 (more on that later) and, even though it didn't make as much money as planned, it got good reviews from critics.
The Transformers toys are over 40 years old and have led to lots of comics, films, and even an animated series on CBBC.
The Trolls franchise (2016 - 2023)

These toys from 1965 look like a world away from the colourful world of the Trolls films
You might have watched and sung along to films like Trolls World Tour and Trolls Band Together, but did you know they were based on a famous toy with a big history?
The troll doll was originally made by a Swedish man called Thomas Dam, who originally carved the curious creatures from wood.
They went up and down in popularity over the next 75 years, before film company DreamWorks, who made the How To Train Your Dragon films, decided to give them their own movie.

Playmobil: The Movie (2019)

The German toys have proved a hit with audiences around the world, but the film version wasn't as popular
You might not have seen this one, as it didn't do very well in cinemas, but the Playmobil toys got their own movie back in 2019.
On a BBC film programme, reviewer Robbie Collin said this was sprung on by the success of The Lego Movie.
The film featured Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe in a voice acting role.
Toy Story (1995 - 2026)

The famous toy franchise has been going for over 30 years
Even though it's not based on one particular toy brand, the Toy Story franchise features lots of toys that were already in the real world.
Toys like Mr Potato Head, Etch A Sketch, and Magic 8-Ball were adapted for the famous films.
Barbie even made an appearance in Toy Story 2, followed by Ken in Toy Story 3.
Lots of people are getting excited about Toy Story 5, which is set to release this year.
