Have you even been wrapping a present or getting crafty and heard the terrible screech of the tape you're using?

Writing in Physical Review, the research team discovered that when the sticky side of the tape peels off the roll, it doesn't happen evenly but tears in narrow bands.
These micro-cracks travel sideways along the tape at supersonic speeds, and when they reach the edge of the tape, generated a sound pulse or a mini sonic boom.
Which of course, is the screeching sound!
