What to do with Britain's 'oldest' rollercoaster?

A historic rollercoaster believed to be the oldest in Britain has closed after more than 100 years.

The ride, called the Scenic Railway, is at Dreamland, a theme park in Margate, Kent.

Dreamland has announced that the rollercoaster will no longer operate, but says it will remain at the park to be enjoyed in a different way.

And for that they want some bright ideas.

The Scenic Railway first opened in 1920 - it's made mostly from wood and is considered an important part of British history.

The ride is officially protected, which means it cannot be removed or changed without special permission.

The rollercoaster stopped running in 2024, when a fault was discovered and experts said it had reached the end of its working life.

A spokesperson for Dreamland said the park is now looking for a long-term plan to "re-invent" the Scenic Railway so it can still be enjoyed by future generations in a "different way" - that won't involve people riding on it.

The Scenic Railway has survived several major events over the years, including fires in 1949, 1957 and 2008. It was most recently restored in 2015, as part of a major project to reopen Dreamland after the park had been closed for 10 years.

Dreamland has said it plans to hold a special exhibition about the rollercoaster's history this year. The park is also asking members of the public to share memories of the ride and ideas for how it could be used in the future.

"If you are a creative thinker with a practical approach, or a dreamer with a thoughtful and achievable vision, we would love to hear from you," the park said on social media.
