One of the unexpected highlights of London 2012 was Samuel L Jackson's unbridled enthusiasm for a wide variety of Olympic sports.

Now the actor is back for Rio 2016.

Some of his more excited commentary isn't suitable to repeat but it's fair to say he is thrilled with the haul of medals Team USA has already claimed.

He tweeted: "So pumped to cheer on USA's finest @TeamUSA tonight! @NBCOlympics Let's do this!#GoTeamUSA #OpeningCeremony.", external

Swimmer Kate Ledecky has taken gold in the women's 400m freestyle and silver as part of the women's 4x100m freestyle relay team.

Jackson tweeted: "Never a doubt, Ledecky KILLS IT!! Go USA!!", external

Meanwhile Simone Biles has been dominating the gymnastic qualifications, including a floor display which topped the leaderboard in the individual all-around final.

Jackson posted on Twitter: "Aly Awesome! Simone Phenomenal!! Go USA!!", external

US gymnast Aly Raisman also qualified in a number of disciplines, including second place in women's floor exercises.

He tweeted: "All eyes on the Women Gymnasts!! Go USA!!", external

At the moment Jackson seems pretty focused on supporting US sporting stars but looking at some of his best tweets from London 2012, we can expect him to start sharing out the love, perhaps for the host nation Brazil.

He tweeted: "Brit Cyclists keep Breaking WR's!! Dude had a point early this week, Brits EXCEL @ Sit Down Sports!", external

And while he doles out the support in spades, in the past, the actor has been unafraid to say it like it is.

Jackson tweeted: "Okay, that was Drunk Lady Staggering Flip dismount! Made famous by many girls missing the top step in da club!", external

:He posted on Twitter: "Looking like the Poles didn't get the memo about these US Beachballers! They got their brooms out, bout to SWEEP!", external

Alas, there are no medals given out for Twitter commentary.

But if there were, Samuel L Jackson would be winning gold, not only for his enthusiasm, but for the most liberal use of capital letters.
