Radio 1 has announced a 10 hour celebration of independent record labels.

On Monday 4 July, every song played between 6pm-4am will be by acts signed to independent record labels.

An independent record label is one that works on its own without funding from major labels and is where lots of artists start their careers.

The station said the event is part of its commitment to support new British music and emerging artists.

There are hundreds of independent labels in the UK, ranging from Hospital Records which specialises in drum and bass to hip hop orientated Big Dada which is home to Roots Manuva and Run the Jewels.

The likes of Adele, Arctic Monkeys and Foals are among some of the biggest names currently signed to indies - although it looks like Adele is set to leave current label XL for Sony.

Skepta and JME's label Boy Better Know, which recently added Drake to its roster, is also independent.

Jason Rackham is the managing director of PIAS UK, which champions and supports independent music around the world.

He told Newsbeat that Radio 1's event is "a welcome acknowledgement and recognition of the continued importance of independent music".

"In a fast changing and disrupted market place music fans are gravitating towards independent labels as curators of authenticity and excellence."
