"I stare at the Wikipedia page sometimes," Sam Smith says, about becoming one of those who've had the honour of recording a Bond theme.

"I mean Nancy Sinatra and Louis Armstrong, it's ridiculous.

"My song will always be on that list," he says.

The singer reveals his excitement in an exclusive Radio 1 and 1Xtra Stories documentary which looks at why the decision on who records the song is always surrounded in mystery.

Sam and his co-writer for Writing's On The Wall, Jimmy Napes, give an insight into what it was like making the song.

"It was an amazing day actually. I was recording Lay Me Down in the room next door," says Sam, sitting in the room where he wrote the track.

"Halfway through recording that vocal Jimmy started playing some chords and we excused ourselves and came in here and wrote the song."

Jimmy, who wrote tracks on Sam's debut album In The Lonely Hour and has also written songs for Disclosure, Mary J Blige and Clean Bandit, describes the opportunity as chance of a lifetime as he's always liked the films.

"Growing up I was a massive Bond fan. I just thought he was the coolest guy. I wanted to be him. Everything about him was just amazing," he says.

"When we got the opportunity to work on the song it was just a dream come true. I couldn't quite believe it. I kind of dreamt of doing it."

Unlike Jimmy, Sam confesses he's only recently got into to the James Bond franchise.

"I was actually quite new to the whole thing. The first ones I properly sat down and watched and loved were Daniel Craig ones," he says.

"Since that I slowly went back and back and back. It's unbelievable. It's this British thing that's a whole different monster."

Sam is the first solo male British act to perform the opening number for a James Bond film since 1965 when Tom Jones was heard over the credits for Thunderball.

That track made history by becoming the first Bond theme to reach number one in the UK.

"As any artist, any singer and I think any human, you just want to leave your mark on the world in what you do. I want my music to last forever and Bond is timeless," Sam explains.
