Radio 1 has kicked off its celebrations marking two decades in Ibiza with some of the world's biggest names in dance music.

Calvin Harris, Disclosure and Pete Tong all performed on the Spanish island.

More than 6,000 people packed into Ushuaia hotel to also see the likes of Gregory Porter, Kwabs and Dusky.

With such a star studded line-up, Radio 1 and 1Xtra DJ Mistajam explained the unwritten rules all performers should abide by.

"If you are playing before someone then don't play any records that they have produced," he said.

"And also don't play anything from their label or that they've been involved in releasing."

Ibiza crowd

With the crowd seemingly spoilt for choice, one name kept popping up when questioned about the night's highlight.

For Alex Perks, 24, and Simone Kelly 23, it was all about Calvin.

"He absolutely bossed it. Ushuaia is my favorite place as well so to have him here, amazing," Alex said.

"The crowd was really nice as well. Not even the rain could spoil it. What's a little drizzle when you are from the UK?" added Simone.

It was Pete Tong who first convinced Radio 1 bosses to venture out to Ibiza back in 1995.

He said: "I've always said I am lucky to do something that I've being doing since a kid out of school. It's definitely a blessing, never complain."

Tong is the only DJ to have been present for all the 20 years that Radio 1 has been visiting the island.

"You know our mission as a station is always to champion and break new music," the DJ said.

"That's why we keep coming back year after year because this is where those stories start."

Ibiza has long been seen as the spiritual home of dance music, although more recently DJs like David Guetta and Calvin Harris have secured residencies in Las Vegas.

BBC Radio 1's Dance Anthems presenter Danny Howard says the island has its own "magic".

"So many places try to replicate what happens here and it always phases out," said Danny.

"People ask, 'What's the Ibiza magic?' No-one knows. It just brings so many people together."

The celebrations continue on Saturday night with Danny Howard live at Cafe Mambo/Cafe Del Mar.

Gregory Porter, Duke Dumont and Rudimental are also scheduled to perform.
