Liam Payne has just announced he is going solo, but it seems his family may have other plans for his future.

The 22-year-old revealed he had signed a record deal with Capitol Records UK on Thursday.

The announcement led to #OneDirectionIsOverParty trending on Twitter as fans feared the band had finished for good.

However, the singer's sister has insisted the boys will get back together soon.

Ruth Payne suggested in a tweet that Liam's solo project is more of a temporary thing until One Direction reunite..

Ruth Payne wrote: "So happy for Liam, I'm biased but he's so talented. It would have been a shame for him not to release music for two years.", external

Liam is the third member of One Direction to sign a solo record deal.

Zayn Malik left the band and Harry Styles signed a contract of his own.

However, Liam is the first to sign a record deal away from the band's parent company, Sony.

Liam tweeted: "Happy to have signed to @CapitolUK. They have an amazing history of artists, I hope I can follow in their footsteps.", external

President of Capitol Records UK, Nick Raphael, said: "It's not often you get the chance to sign such a talented and ambitious 22-year-old who has already conquered the world."

The singer then tweeted: "One direction will always be my home and family but I'm very excited to see what this chapter brings.", external

While many Directioners panicked when they found out Liam was going solo, others posted messages to reassure fans that this type of announcement was expected.

Fan account Radio1Direction tweeted: "Guys, just a friendly reminder that we all knew this. The boys warned us in interviews that there will be opportunities for them like...", external

Fan account Radio1Direction's second tweet: "This is what they will do during the hiatus, and they can always come back together as a band. This isn't the end.", external

Liam will be heading into the studio shortly, knowing his former band mate Zayn Malik went to the top of the UK Official Album Chart with his solo record Mind of Mine.

Music from Harry Styles is not expected for a while because he is currently filming Christopher Nolan's World War Two movie Dunkirk.

Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson are currently working on various projects.
