Australia and New Zealand are commemorating Anzac day, the anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landing at Gallipoli in World War I.

Tens of thousands of Australians and New Zealanders took part in events honouring veterans and the war dead.

Over 10,000 Australian and New Zealand servicemen died in the eight-month Gallipoli campaign.

The 1915 landings in modern-day Turkey were the first time that Australia and New Zealand had fought as independent countries.

It is a day of national significance for Australians and New Zealanders, and is said to be increasingly popular with young people.

Dawn services were held, followed by parades with veterans and members of the armed forces.

Family members of war veterans took part in the parade, cheered on by onlookers.

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said it was a day to think about "who we are as Australians".

Australian indigenous prisoners of war were also acknowledged for the first time, at a special service in Sydney.
