Taxi drivers in Dundee have been warned that their licences will not be renewed next year if they are not adequately trained.

Cab drivers have until 31 May to pass one of three training courses approved by Dundee City Council's licensing committee.

There are currently about 1,400 licensed taxi drivers in Dundee.

Licensing committee convener Stewart Hunter said the obligation was being made "crystal clear" to drivers.

He said: "We have been discussing this for years and the need for the requirement to be met by 31 May is well-known and widely talked about in the trade.

"But I want to make it absolutely clear that there are no ifs or buts.

"Any driver who doesn't have the qualification after 31 May will not have their licence renewed and could potentially lose their livelihood."

The courses are run at Dundee and Angus College either as part-time or fast track modules.

Subjects covered include customer service, vehicle maintenance and health and safety.

Mr Hunter said: "The courses are driver-friendly, relevant to local legislation and interactive to ensure a positive learning experience."
