Police said the speed restrictions were the maximum permitted, not a "target speed"

A new 20mph speed limit has been introduced across most of Dumfries town centre to try to improve cyclist and pedestrian safety in the area.

It applies to all roads within an area bounded by Loreburn Street, English Street, Shakespeare Street, Nith Place, Whitesands, Buccleuch Street, Church Crescent and Academy Street.

Also included in the scheme are Burns Street and Clerkhill.

The project is part of wider measures to improve travel in the town.

Dumfries and Galloway Council planning director Alistair Speedie said: "The introduction of this new, lower, speed limit will benefit pedestrian and cyclist users of the affected roads and encourage such use by others."

A police spokesman added: "Permanent road signs are in place to inform motorists of the lengths of road governed by the new 20mph speed restriction.

"I would ask motorists to think seriously about the speed at which they travel and to comply with the new lower speed restriction for the benefit of all road users.

"Like all speed restrictions this new 20mph limit is the maximum permitted limit and certainly not a target speed."
