Pumping continues in North Yorkshire flood risk areas

Pumps have been working overnight in parts of North Yorkshire to prevent flooding following the rapid thaw of snow and further rainfall.

The pumps are in operation in Malton, Norton, Old Malton and Brawby.

Some properties were flooded at the end of last year.

Several organisations are working together in the Ryedale district, as part of Silver Command, to monitor the threat of flooding and co-ordinate a response.

Supt Glynn Payne from North Yorkshire Police said: "We have made the decision to reform Silver Command to ensure that we can all work together to deploy pumps and monitor the situation throughout Ryedale."

Supt Payne said he was not aware of any properties being flooded.

Ben Hughes from the Environment Agency said the pumps would remain in the area until "they were not needed".

"The river level is still high but the real issue is with the groundwater level," he said.

"The levels are beginning to rise."

"It will continue to be an issue for the next week."
