Battle of Britain pilots honoured by Lancing College

Five World War 2 pilots who were all pupils at a West Sussex college have been honoured with a Spitfire flypast.

A plaque has also been unveiled to commemorate the former Lancing College pupils.

All five airmen took part in the Battle of Britain, with Flying Officer Jeffrey Quill becoming an OBE.

Air Vice Marshal Stanley Vincent and Sqn Ldrs John Sample, Jefferson Wedgwood and Robert Woodward were also honoured.

The plaque presented by the Battle of Britain Society to the college was unveiled in its War Memorial Cloister, before the Spitfire flypast took place.

Mr Quill entered the RAF directly from the college in 1931 and after only five hours training was flying solo.

He became chief test pilot at Vickers Supermarine where he tested Spitfires and other aircraft.

Mr Quill became an OBE in 1942 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 1980.

During his retirement, he wrote about the Spitfire and its heritage and was elected president of the Spitfire Society.

He died in 1996 on the Isle of Man, where he is buried.
