Some services at Royal Stoke University Hospital were affected when power generators failed

A hospital declared a major incident after a loss of power left patients lying in the dark and staff unable to access computer systems.

Back-up power generators at Royal Stoke University Hospital failed during a power cut at about 19:00 BST on Thursday night, a spokesman confirmed.

Wards lights went out, while blood results and X-rays were inaccessible.

After the initial failure of the generators, power was restored and the incident was dealt with by 21:00 BST.
