Stephen Watson is currently Deputy Chief Constable of Durham Constabulary
South Yorkshire Police have appointed Stephen Watson as the force's new chief constable.
Mr Watson, who was named as preferred candidate in June, was confirmed in the role following a meeting of the South Yorkshire Police and Crime Panel.
He is due to join the force in November from Durham Constabulary where he is currently Deputy Chief Constable.
He replaces David Crompton who was suspended following the Hillsborough Inquests.
Dr Alan Billings, Police and Crime Commissioner for South Yorkshire, said he was confident Mr Watson had would be able to lead "one of the most high profile forces in the country".
Mr Watson, who has been appointed for five years, said he was looking forward to taking up the role.
He said: "I fully recognise the difficulties that the force has faced in recent times and I am committed to leading the organisation through times of change."
