Plans for Sheffield's second University Technical College (UTC) on the site of the former Don Valley Stadium have been approved by the city council.

The £10m college will employ 56 people and serve 600 pupils, aged 14-19, when it opens in September 2016.

It is backed by The Sheffield College and Sheffield Hallam University and the city's Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The new college will specialise in human sciences and computing.

In addition to offering a standard academic programme pupils will gain a technical qualification to develop industry skills.

Councillor Jackie Drayton, cabinet member for children, young people and families, said: "This UTC will be a huge boost in driving forward our ambition to make sure every young person gets the right training for future jobs across the Sheffield City Region."

The new college will be part of the 26-acre Olympic Legacy Park to be built on the Don Valley site.

The park will also include a research centre, a 3,000-seat arena and an academy for 1,200 pupils.

The city's first UTC, which is dedicated to technical industries, opened in 2013.
