All wards at Bath's Royal United Hospital have been shut to visitors following a norovirus outbreak.

Hospital officials said visits would only be permitted in "exceptional circumstances".

The bug, also known as the winter vomiting virus, has affected a number of wards which have been closed over the last two weeks.

Restrictions also apply to maternity and children's wards, with only parents of patients permitted on the wards.

A hospital spokeswoman said: "By taking the difficult decision to restrict visiting, we are significantly reducing the number of opportunities for norovirus to reach our patients and staff.

"We appreciate that families like to visit their loved ones when they are in hospital, but we need to balance this with preventing our vulnerable patients from catching this virus."
