A man who killed his landlord by starting a fire with petrol at flats has been jailed for 26 years.

Sekou Soumare, 56, started the blaze at the property in Nottingham, where he and Christopher Bonnick, 55, lived.

Mr Bonnick, who was a grandfather of four, was taken to hospital with 97% burns, police said, but died shortly afterwards.

Soumare, of Derby Grove, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to murder at Nottingham Crown Court earlier.

Nottinghamshire Police said Soumare reported the blaze on Sunday 22 March but when crews arrived he said nobody was left inside the property.

He was arrested at the scene after confessing to starting the fire.

'Barbaric murder'

Mr Bonnick was later found inside the building, still breathing, but died a short time later.

His daughter Clara Bonnick said: "My dad was full of pure goodness, full of a spiritual and loving aura with a warm heart.

"I just hope he realises how much he is missed and how much we love him.

"My dad was not ready to die, he had too much to live for. He didn't deserve this. It wasn't his time to go."

Det Ch Insp Leigh Sanders said: "This is one of the most barbaric murders I have ever investigated.

"Mr Bonnick died a prolonged and painful death.

"Not only did Soumare rob a family of their father and grandfather, he endangered the lives of other residents living in the flats and destroyed his own home in the process."
