Teenage crash victim criticises driver's sentence

A teenage girl from Greater Manchester who was critically injured by a drink-driver has criticised the length of his sentence.

Devon Foster, 14, from Bolton suffered multiple injuries when Christopher Marr crashed in to her and her friends on 21 August.

Marr, 23, who admitted dangerous driving at Bolton Crown Court, was jailed for 26 months.

On sentencing the judge said he felt the jail term was inadequate.

'A joke'

Devon, who was released from hospital on Monday and is still suffering from her injuries said: "The only bright side of [the sentence] is that it's keeping him off the streets.

"I just wish it could be for a lot longer because it could be 13 months and he would be out.

"It really does need a longer sentence for anybody who does something like this to anybody else," said Devon.

Her mother Samantha Foster described the sentence as "a joke".

"Devon was just lying there lifeless and [doctors] had to make her comatose because they didn't know the extent of her injuries.

"There was bleeding in her head and because of the impact on her head the doctors didn't want her to damage herself any more," she said.

Refused sample

Sentencing judge Steven Everett has asked for transcripts of the trial to be sent to the Home Office with a request to extend the sentencing powers for dangerous drivers.

The maximum sentence currently for dangerous driving is two years.

Marr pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, in addition to aggravated vehicle taking, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and failing to provide a specimen.

Two of Devon's friends, a boy and a girl, both aged 15 and a 33-year-old woman also all suffered serious injuries in the crash.

The court had heard that Marr of Stone Street, Bolton, was driving his girlfriend's red Volkswagen Golf at speeds of up to 80 or 90mph before it mounted the pavement on Darwen Road.

When arrested at the scene, Marr refused to provide a blood or breath sample.
