Calderdale Council voted to demolish the former library despite protests
Plans for a £9.25m library and archive in Halifax have been submitted to Calderdale Council.
It will be built at the foot of the 235ft (71m) Square Church Spire, in Square Road, and have an entrance inside the 18th Century Piece Hall.
The library will replace the town's former facility that was earmarked for demolition by the council in November.
Council leader Tim Swift said it was part of an "exciting vision for a vibrant cultural quarter" in the town.
"The development will bring fantastic, state-of-the-art facilities for the community whilst making the most of our wonderful heritage," said Mr Swift.
Protesters angry at plans to demolish the existing library in Northgate have previously criticised the proposed development for being a "smaller building in a less convenient area".
'Children's library'
A Calderdale Council report said the current library was in a poor state of repair and was "not effective or practical" to consider refurbishment, which it said would cost in the region of £9.4m.
The new building will incorporate the remaining standing archaeology of Square Church, which was largely destroyed by fire in 1971, including the rose window.
It will be built over four floors and feature a children's library, digital media area and meeting rooms.
Entrances will be built on Square Road and in Piece Hall, which is undergoing a £19m refurbishment itself.
A planning application was submitted to the council earlier this week.
The council has also said it will set aside £90,000 for repair works on the Industrial Museum.
