A Derbyshire man was taken to hospital by air ambulance after falling 20ft (6m) from a ladder while putting up Christmas lights.

The Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance was called to the man's house in Alfreton after he fell while putting up external lights.

The man, in his 30s, was flown to Royal Derby Hospital for treatment.

The air ambulance service urged people to take extra care when putting up external lights.

Dr Dhusky Kumar, said: "The trend for decorating homes externally means more people, perhaps unused to using long ladders, are risking injury in this way.

"Nobody wants to spend Christmas in plaster or suffer a worse injury, so take all the usual precautions such as having someone with you to secure the base of the ladder."
