A hospital ward in Cumbria has been closed following a suspected norovirus outbreak.

Ward nine at Furness General Hospital in Barrow has been closed to admissions after diarrhoea and vomiting broke out among patients.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust said visitors are asked not to visit with children.

A trust spokesman said by not allowing admissions, it was hoped the outbreak could be "resolved quickly".

Norovirus, which is sometimes known as the winter vomiting bug, is one of the most common stomach bugs in the UK and causes diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting.
