A girl was rescued from the river, but a man remains missing

A search is under way for a man missing in the River Esk in Cumbria.

Emergency services were called to Longtown Bridge, near Carlisle, at 16:15 BST, after the 32-year-old got into difficulties in the water.

A young girl was rescued from the water by the man before he got into trouble himself, police in Cumbria said.

Police divers and fire crews are involved in the search, along with the coastguard and an RAF helicopter with thermal imaging equipment.

A Cumbria Constabulary spokesman confirmed it was earlier alerted to "a report of a man in the water, believed to have been in difficulties".

He added: "A girl was rescued from the water shortly before and is at Cumberland Infirmary receiving treatment.

"She is not believed to be seriously hurt."
