£10m to repair Cornwall flood damage

Nearly £10m is to be spent on repairing flood damage in Cornwall.

Towns and villages across the county were affected by storms in February.

Environment minister and North Cornwall Liberal Democrat MP Dan Rogerson said the government was to give £7.5m to help 68 flood defences across the county be repaired or reinforced.

Cornwall Council said it would add about £2m to the grant from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

In February, flooding was reported from Penzance and Newlyn in the west of the county to Looe and Cawsand in the east.

Military personnel helped put sandbags in place in Bude and Helston.

Kingsand's Grade II-listed clock tower was damaged twice by storms, with civil engineers saying it was "facing demolition" before it was saved after repairs to its foundations.

Trains to and from the county were affected by the destruction of the south west main rail line in Dawlish, Devon.

The track was swept away with part of a sea wall, cutting off services linking Cornwall and much of Devon with the rest of the UK.
