A453, which links the M1 in Leicestershire and Nottingham, carries about 32,000 vehicles a day
Most of one of the busiest roads in the East Midlands is to close overnight for four weeks for resurfacing work.
A stretch on the A453, between the M1 in Leicestershire and the Clifton Lane roundabout in Nottingham, will face closures from 22 January.
The Highways Agency said diversions will be put in place from 20:00 GMT, at the earliest, to 05:30 GMT, at the latest, to minimise extra congestion.
Work to widen the 11-mile (17.7km) road is due to start by 2015.
The agency said the road surface work, which is estimated to cost £1.68m, needs to be undertaken for "safety and durability" reasons.
The stretch of the A453 will be shut between 20:00 GMT and 05:30 GMT, Monday to Thursday; from 21:00 GMT to 05:30 on Fridays; and between 21:00 GMT to 05:00 GMT on Sundays.
The Nottinghamshire road will be fully open on Saturdays.
The Highways Agency said that in the past some "emergency patching" work had been carried out, but no "major maintenance" work has taken place on that section of road for a number of years.
The agency added that the work is in addition to the £164m project to turn the A453 into a dual carriageway.
Full details of the closure can be found on the Highways Agency, external website.
