The death was caused by an 'operational accident', the MoD said
A soldier from 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment has died in an "operational accident" in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said.
The incident, in the Nad Ali district of Helmand, was being investigated.
His next of kin have been informed, the MoD added. It is not yet known where the soldier was from.
His death brings the number of British military deaths in Afghanistan since 2001 to 351.
They include 42 who died in accidents, from illnesses, or from non-combat injuries.
Task Force Helmand spokesman Lt Col David Eastman said of the soldier: "He has forfeited his life for the greater good, bringing hope to a people struggling to live their daily lives in peace - his place in our thoughts is assured."
