The sighting of a big cat prowling around freely on a motorway near Paris has led to a massive police hunt.

But it's not the first time people have reported spotting mysterious felines.

Far from it. In the UK there's a long history of people claiming to have seen all sorts of cat-shaped creatures from lions to leopards roaming the countryside.

Here are just a few of them.

Helicopters were launched in the hunt for a "lion" spotted in a field at St Osyth near Clacton-on-Sea.

The holidaymakers said it was a creature the size of a lion with a white chest and a tan, beige-coloured body.

The search was called off after it turned out to be a large fluffy pet cat called "Teddy Bear".

A woman driving down a road during the day reported having to slam on her brakes when a large tiger walked out in front of her.

Armed police and helicopters searched for the big cat but found nothing.

There had been rumours of a circus in the area which used to take their tiger for a walk.

Experts said the cat was three feet long and either a hybrid animal or a young leopard

This sighting has been called the best evidence yet that wild cats roam freely across the UK countryside.

A large black cat was spotted walking along a dry stone wall.

It was believed to be a young black leopard.

It was thought to be too large to be a domestic cat but could be a hybrid mix.

Beast of Bodmin?

Also a large black cat-like creature sighted at gardens in Cornwall in 2011 could have been the so-called Beast of Bodmin, according to a head gardener.

Strange claw marks an inch thick were also been found on the bark of a shrub at Trewithen Gardens near Truro.

Head Gardener Gary Long said he had a glimpse of a "very large black cat-like creature" and believed it could have been the 'Beast'.

Danny Bamping from the British Big Cat Society, which researches wild cats, told Newsbeat it was highly unlikely there were tigers, lions or leopards on the loose in the UK.

"But there could be other types of wild felines," he says. "70% of sightings in Britain are of big black cats.

"We have thousands of sightings reported to us every year.

"Do we have a hybrid type of cat that's unique to science here? I would say, yes."
