British Gas is defending its latest operating profits which are up 24% to £742 million.
The firm, which put up the cost of fuel two months ago, says it only makes four per cent profit on the gas it supplies.
The company says the rise is down to having a quarter of a million extra customers.
Most of it came in the first part of 2010 when the weather was cold and bills were lower but they went back up as the cost of gas rose.
At the moment energy watchdog Ofgem is reviewing the market after claims suppliers were making excessive profits.
Carmel Mulhall

"I think our last bill was about £300. That's for the last quarter.
"We have the heating on a lot when it's cold.
"When it was the winter we had it on non-stop. We now have it on a timer so it's warm before we get home from work.
"I can't believe how much profit British Gas made. I'd love to know where all of our payment goes.
"I wish I made a smidgeon of £742 million.
"Luckily I can afford to pay my bills, but I wouldn't like to have to make the choice between getting food or heating.
"I do rant and rave but I can kind of afford it, all be it I have to sacrifice other things. It's not great."
Helena Carr

"I think we paid £50 for our last bill. We pay it monthly.
"I kind of resent paying so much towards it because I could spend that on something else.
"I just have a two bedroom semi, so it's only a little house.
"I think so much profit is disgusting when you're struggling to pay your bills.
"I don't find it hard to get the money but it just means I can't spend my money on other things.
"Every month it's non-stop. I've still got my heating on because it's so cold.
"I know they are out to make profits, that's fair enough but they should pass some of that profit on to the people who are using their service."
Kerry Gillett

"The prices are really expensive and I don't really want to be spending money on it. There are better things to spend money on.
"I try not to put the heating on as much as I can, I just have it on a couple of hours in the morning and a couple in the evening but the house was cold.
"Blankets come in useful. I'm amazed they made so much. I'm not having any heating on and they're making loads of money."
Nim Rhaesparan

"I think the last bill for our house was about £400. I live with three other people.
"It's a lot of money but it's gas and electricity so we have to pay it don't we?
"We don't really have a choice.
"I assume it's being regulated so I guess that's what it costs because we have an old house we don't have double glazing and it means it's really expensive over the winter.
"I'm quite lucky everyone in my house works so we can afford it. I'd hate to be an elderly person living off a state pension who can't afford to heat the house."
