Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed Wayne Rooney wants to leave Manchester United.

He told the club's TV channel MUTV: "We have had a discussion about the whole situation. The player says he is adamant he wants to leave."

It turns out Rooney called off contract negotiations back in August.

The 24-year-old England striker's current deal at United runs out in the summer of 2012.

Ferguson said he was "dumbfounded" by Rooney's decision and added: "Only months before, he was saying he was at the greatest club in the world."

Rooney will not be playing today (20 October) when Manchester United take on Bursapoor in the Champions League.

He was stretchered off during training with an ankle injury.

Christopher Gunter: "No one player is bigger than the club, in Fergie we trust, just hope Rooney doesn't end up with more regret in his life. Utd will deffo need to buy a new striker."
