Rooney wants to play - Capello

Wayne Rooney has flown to Switzerland for Tuesday's Euro 2012 qualifier - and will play according to the team manager.

Speaking to the press on Monday afternoon, Fabio Capello said that the team are "focused on the game".

He said: "I spoke with him and he is happy to play."

There were doubts about whether the 24-year-old would have a place in the England squad after claims about his private life appeared in two newspapers over the weekend.

England took off for Basle on Monday morning (6 September), and Rooney was on the flight as scheduled.

England captain Steven Gerrard also praised Rooney's "big character", saying newspaper claims "won't stop him from playing well tomorrow night".

Midfielder James Milner says Wayne Rooney turned up to training yesterday as usual (5 September) and deserves his place in the squad.

Despite going 11 internationals since he last found the net for his country, Rooney remains a key figure for England.

'Young and stupid'

The Manchester City player has no doubt Rooney is capable of ending that barren run.

"I am a player, but I am a fan as well - I want the best possible team out there for England," he said.

"He showed what a player he is on Friday [against Bulgaria]. Hopefully he can go out and get a hat-trick tomorrow."

Wayne Rooney's on a growing a list of England stars to face claims about his private life this year including Ashley Cole, Peter Crouch and John Terry.

The striker admitted visiting prostitutes in 2004, saying he was "young and stupid".

In a statement at the time he said: "Foolish as it now seems I did on occasions visit massage parlours and prostitutes.

"I now regret it deeply and hope people may understand that it was the sort of mistake you make when you are young and stupid."
