    Islanders are being urged to report Asian hornet sightings in Jersey after a man was stung and sent to hospital.

    The man, whose condition is currently unknown, went into anaphylactic shock at the Sun Bowls Club in St Helier on Friday.

    He was working nearby a nest, which was "disturbed" by a greenkeeper who was trimming a hedge.

    Tim de Feu, Director of Environmental Protection for the States of Jersey, says the government will now be contacting landscape gardening companies and farms to ensure workers inspect areas for flying insects.

    "Given that Asian hornet nests can be anywhere from house roof spaces to sheds, trees, hedges and brambles, people working in these areas should inspect them for flying insects," he said.

    He is also calling on islanders to visit the governments Asian hornet website, external, and to report any sightings.

    Asian hornets are an invasive species and feed on all pollinators. About 30 nests have been found in Jersey this year and beekeepers say they are now established across the Channel Islands.

    There could be more calls in the next few years for pay increases to keep up with the costs of food and energy bills, according to Jersey's citizens advice bureau.

    Between June 2017 and June this year the average worker saw wages increase by 3.5%, according to States of Jersey figures, external, but the cost of living jumped by 4.5% over the same period.

    It is the first time in six years earnings have failed to keep pace with inflation.

    Malcolm Ferry says rising overall costs of living were largely "out of consumer's control".

    "I think going forward there will be more demanding calls for higher pay claims to keep pace with what's happening in the real world," he added.

    The figures show the average weekly earnings in a number of the island's different industries in June 2018.

    Finance workers were the best paid: the average full-time worker took home £1,020 per week.

    The lowest was those working full-time in hotels restaurants and bars, who were paid a weekly average of £440. Overall, the average Jersey staff member earned £740 a week.

    A new world record for sailing round Britain and Ireland has been confirmed by a team including a man from Jersey.

    Phil Sharp was part of the Imerys Clean Energy team that won their class and set a new record in the Sevenstar Round Britain and Ireland race. They crossed the finish line in a time of eight days, four hours, 14 minutes and 43 seconds.

    The race was one of Sharp's last events before taking on the Route Du Rhum, external Atlantic Challenge in November.

    A criminal investigation has not been started by police in Guernsey after tenants voiced concerns over an estate agent.

    Customers of Sarnia Estate Agents claim tenants have been left homeless or lost their deposits and that landlords have been left abandoned.

    A local deputy said a third party agency may be set up in Guernsey to help protect residents' deposits in the future.

    Officers said the Economic Crime Division (ECD) were "aware" of the developing situation, but "no criminal investigation" had been put in place.

    "ECD are recording details of individuals who have been in contact with us for a variety of reasons and we expect to be back in contact with these individuals next week," they said.

    Police added it had been indicated Sarnia Estate Agents had been listed "for strike off" by the Guernsey Registry.

    The BBC has been unable to contact Sarnia Estate Agents for comment.

    A politician has called on Jersey's government to stop "interfering" in people's lives, after a damning complaints board hearing.

    The Constable of St Mary, John Le Bailly, has praised one of his parishioners, Ivor Barette, for "standing up" to authorities and lodging a complaint against the way he was treated by officials overseeing the renovation of his grade three-listed property.

    He was fined in 2016 for making changes to the windows and flooring of the protected building.

    But the States of Jersey Complaints Board subsequently ruled in his favour, saying enforcement officers discriminated against him during the renovations.

    Mr Barette said protest signs he put up around his property would not be coming down until he received "compensation".

    Constable Le Bailly said the signs were an eyesore, but they drew attention to Mr Barette's situation.

    He said he agreed the parishioner was "wronged" and that a simple written application and guidelines should be the only requirements for make changes to the property.

    "We're being dictated to," he said. "The government is not listening to the people out there".

    The department previously said it tried to work with clients to agree the best way to protect the island's heritage.

    The bowls club in Jersey where a man was stung by an Asian hornet and taken to hospital has been closed, according to the States.

    The maintenance worker is being treated at Jersey General Hospital after he had an allergic reaction to the sting.

    A States spokesman said there was no indication of the seriousness of the man's injuries, but it was hoped the treatment was "precautionary".

    Police have cordoned off the area and the bowls club, at First Tower in St Helier has closed. Pest controllers are due to destroy the nest later on Friday.

    The worker was with a greenkeeper at the club who was trimming a hedge on a footpath and disturbed a nest.

    Jersey and Guernsey are looking for ways to deal with "significant" cyber attacks.

    The governments of both islands have jointly hired a company to investigate the best model for a combined "incident response capability".

    The model would be designed to help the governments, their "critical infrastructure" and potentially local businesses respond to a "significant cyber security incident".

    Consultancy company Atkins will run a three-month study before delivering a report that will recommend the best model, which will be considered next year.

    Deputy Mary Lowe, the President of Guernsey's Committee for Home Affairs said whilst the islands had the capability to react to "lower level" cyber attacks, it was important governments were able to deal with "a far wider range" of threats.

    The Channel Islands are currently able to call on the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre, external in the event of a "major cyber attack", she added.

    A man has been taken to hospital after being stung by an Asian hornet, Jersey's environment department has confirmed.

    He was working with a greenkeeper at the Sun Bowls Club in St Helier on Friday morning who was trimming a hedge and disturbed a nest.

    After the nest was disturbed the man was stung and had an anaphylactic reaction, his current condition is unknown.

    Police closed the footpath and Tim de Feu, Jersey's Director of Environmental Protection, said a member of the Jersey beekeepers association's "hornet hunting" team was sent to confirm the nest.

    Pest control teams were then called to destroy it, and it is due to me removed on Friday afternoon.

    Plans for rolling out Guernsey's two-school model, external are "a way down the road" says the island's director of education.

    Andrew Warren, says officials have spent the last couple of months planning in detail for the change, which will see the creation of two states-run, non-selective high schools each with their own sixth form.

    "That plan is moving forward", he said.

    "We have more detail to put into it such as time scaling and saying when these new schools are going to be completed."

    But Mr Warren added he was "confident" the States would be able to produce a "practical and effective plan".

    Police have closed a footpath near a bowls club in Jersey after an Asian hornet nest was "disturbed".

    Officers have advised the public to avoid routes near Sun Bowls Club at First Tower, St Helier.

    Asian hornets are an invasive species which feeds on pollinators and have become established in the Channel Islands.

    Local beekeepers have found 30 nests in Jersey so far this year.

    Police are investigating after a vehicle crashed into a van which was parked in a loading bay in Guernsey.

    The van was unattended at a bay in St Peter Port on Le Bordage at the bottom of Tower Hill sometime between 15:00 and about 16:30 on Tuesday 21 August.

    Officers said damage was caused to the van, a Ford Transit, and it was likely damage was caused to the other vehicle.

    Guernsey's government says it will be releasing information on "key island-specific" issues which could arise if the UK leaves the EU in a "no deal" scenario, following advice from the UK.

    On Thursday, the UK Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab set out what he called "practical and proportionate" advice in case the UK leaves the EU with "no deal".

    Gavin St Pier, the president of Guernsey's Policy and Resources Committee, said the government's focus was on ensuring the island was "ready to manage the changes" of Brexit "whether there is a deal or not".

    He said the information from Mr Raab on the no deal possibility was "welcome", so businesses and individuals would know what to expect and "can factor this into their own Brexit plans".

    For the first time in six years, average earnings in Jersey have fallen in real terms, according to the latest figures.

    The States of Jersey Statistics Unit said, taking into account inflation, or increases in the prices of goods and services, average earnings across the private and public sector were 0.9% lower in real terms than in June 2017.

    This is despite an overall increase in public sector earnings by 3.1% and private sector earnings by 3.6%, according to the States' annual index of average earnings.
