  2. Junction set to become Toucan crossingpublished at 17:01 BST 22 August 2018

    Chris Quevatre
    BBC News Online

Plans for a major junction in St Sampson, Guernsey, to become a light-controlled "Toucan crossing" have been submitted to the Development and Planning Authority.

The junction of Grandes Maisons Road and Bulwer Avenue in Guernsey is a major commuter route for workers heading to St Peter Port.

    Crossing

A Toucan crossing is a system where both pedestrians and cyclists can cross simultaneously, after waiting for traffic to be halted by traffic lights.

A statement from Traffic and Highway Services said: "The existing difficulties experienced by people who walk and cycle along the shared path on the eastern seaboard when attempting to cross the road will be improved significantly."

    Quote Message

People who walk or cycle currently have to navigate their way through high volumes of traffic in order to cross the road in this area, which many find intimidating, so this initiative will provide a much safer and more regulated means of crossing this road. However, traffic will continue to flow normally unless the signals have been activated."

  3. Sarnia Estate Agents: GFSC 'determining the facts'published at 16:33 BST 22 August 2018

    Chris Quevatre
    BBC News Online

Guernsey's Financial Services Commission is "determining the facts" around an estate agent that is not responding to clients.

Sarnia Estate Agents has missed a filing deadline with the Guernsey Registry, and could cease to exist as a business if it does not pay its annual fees within two months.

Clients who are owed money by the company have described not being able to get in contact, with one woman who is owed nearly £2,000 in property deposits saying she is "presuming the worst".

    Quote Message

Sarnia Estate Agents is registered with the Commission as a Prescribed Business solely as part of the Bailiwick’s anti-money laundering and combating the financing of terrorism framework. In common with all Prescribed Businesses, which includes Accountants, Estate Agents and the Legal Profession, it is not licensed by the Commission nor is it subjected to prudential or conduct supervision. At this early stage, the Commission is seeking to determine the facts and as such, it would not be appropriate to offer any further comments."

  12. 'Buffering could end' with the introduction of 5G internetpublished at 10:52 BST 22 August 2018

    Ryan Morrison
    BBC News Online

Waiting for a video to load or "buffering" could be a thing of the past once fifth generation (5G) mobile broadband is introduced according to the director of the Channel Islands Competition and Regulatory Authorities (CICRA).

Tim Ringsdore said 5G mobile internet can offer speeds up to 20 times faster than the current fourth generation (4G) networks and is also more stable.

He said it will pave the way for technology including driverless cars and delivery drones across the Channel Islands.

CICRA is looking to make licences available to companies wanting to introduce 5G networks and Mr Ringsdore said it could mean new jobs and more companies setting up in the islands.

  13. Sarnia Estate Agents: 'You can only presume the worst'published at 10:05 BST 22 August 2018

    Chris Quevatre
    BBC News Online

Lottie Barnes was meant to move into her new flat by now, but has instead paid nearly £2,000 to a company that hasn't responded to her messages "for weeks".

Sarnia Estate Agents is on the "strike-off list" of the Guernsey Registry, after failing to pay their annual validation fees.

    Sarnia Estates

Their customers are starting to worry that a lack of contact, which was first explained as a change in premises, could be more serious.

    Quote Message

I paid the deposit and then last month I paid the first month's rent. I emailed them and asked if they'd received the payment. They said they were moving and would get back to me. I emailed them a week later but didn't hear anything from them. I made a final payment yesterday and tried to contact them to find out where their new office is so I could collect the keys this morning.

    Quote Message

I can not get hold of them. None of the telephone numbers are working, the emails are bouncing back, I tweeted them, I sent a message on Facebook, and I've heard nothing. I should be in my new home today. You can only presume the worst. I've basically paid them nearly £2,000, and I need that money back. It's devastating, I'd ordered a bed that was due to be delivered today, which I've had to cancel.

    Quote Message

I've worked really hard to save this deposit and save the rent, and this was an amazing opportunity for me to have my own place again. I don't know how I'm going to find the money to get another property."
