    "Significant damage" was caused to the turf of a football pitch in St Peter when a car was "deliberately" driven around it, police have said.

    It happened some time between 18:00 on 12 January and 11:00 the following morning at the Jersey Wanderers Football Club pitch.

    Officers said this is the second time the pitch had been damaged, and a similar incident took place in late December.

    Groundsman Julian Wright said he was "gutted" at the damage caused, and the pitch could be out of service for "months".

    “The marks are quite deep," he said. "It will take a while to fix."

    The rector of St Lawrence has appealed for calm among his parishioners after a dispute over a toilet extension stopped the work.

    Work on the controversial £80,000 extension at St Lawrence church has been halted by the parish constable and the rector because of the disagreement until a parish assembly is carried out.

    The Reverend Phil Warren has contacted the police over what he describes as vitriolic personal attacks against him.

    Guernsey Police say there's no evidence connecting a missing man's links to an anti-Russian movement in Ukraine and his car being found burnt out in Guernsey.

    Mikus Alps, a 33-year-old Latvian national, has been missing in the island for a week. His car was found on Monday 8 January containing a shotgun and human remains, subject to further tests.

    ‘We are aware that Mr Alps has connections with a pro-Ukrainian and anti-Russian movement," Chief Officer Patrick Rice said.

    "Given that it is yet to be formally confirmed whether Mr Alps is alive or deceased, there is no concrete evidence at this stage linking his involvement with this movement to his car being found burnt out."

    A Facebook video posted by a group calling itself the 8th Battalion of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army appears to show Mr Alps talking to fighters.

    The group, which claims to have taken part in key battles in the conflict with Russia, says Mr Alps travelled to Ukraine to bring supplies.

    In the video Mr Alps said he was visiting the country for the first time to see the situation for himself after talking with Latvian friends about the conflict.

    He goes on to say he has military experience, including serving in a military unit as a machine gunner.

    Schools in Guernsey jumped at the chance to join a scheme asking children to run or walk every day for at least 15 minutes according to the Guernsey lifelong learning manager.

    The mechanic working for the RNLI at its lifeboat station in St Helier has resigned, the charity has confirmed.

    A spokeswoman said the departure was due to him "wanting to spend more time with his family".

    As a result, the RNLI said the responsibility for maintaining the charity’s inshore lifeboat would be covered by members of staff based at the island’s St Catherine’s station.

    She added technicians from Poole in Dorset would be brought over to Jersey "as needed" to repair and maintain the St Helier station’s all-weather lifeboat.

    The mechanic has been praised by the charity for "many years of excellent service", which added that recruitment for the full-time, paid position "wouldn’t take too long".

  10. Five rescued by RNLI St Helier inshore lifeboatpublished at 16:15 GMT 15 January 2018

    Five people were rescued by RNLI volunteers in Jersey this weekend after two the boats they were on had problems.

    One of the boats had mechanical problems and the other was running low on fuel.

    The St Helier inshore lifeboat helped the people on board a 5m-long motor boat which ran out of fuel on its way back from Guernsey.

    They had been assisting another motor boat which had mechanical issues.

    The inshore lifeboat, crewed by existing RNLI volunteers and RNLI-trained fire and rescue personnel, took one motor boat in tow and escorted the other back to St Helier.

    More high wealth individuals were given permission to live in Jersey in 2017 than the previous five years, figures from the States have shown.

    The Jersey Evening Post reports one of the 34 successful applicants last year was the Russian billionaire and owner of Chelsea Football Club, Roman Abramovich.

    In 2012, 12 people were given the special status.

    What is a High Value Resident (HVR)?

    • HVR's are individuals who must be able to prove they have a sustainable, annual worldwide earnings "comfortably in excess" of £625,000.
    • They are usually required to buy or lease a property in Jersey valued at more the £1.75m.
    • Individuals are granted "entitled" status, allowing them to live and work in Jersey.
    • Other factors are considered, including voluntary/business contribution to the community, sponsoring sporting initiatives aimed at young people, positive or negative media coverage, skills which could benefit the local community, charitable work and any criminal record.

    The last five years has seen a gradual increase in the amount of HVR's granted "entitled" status.

    A Jersey deputy says the Jersey General Hospital "is getting old and needs constant work" to keep it going.

    Richard Rondel is having cancer treatment and said a new hospital was urgently required as money was constantly needed to keep the current building operational.

    He was speaking after Environment Minister Deputy Steve Luce rejected outline planning permission, external for the redevelopment of the £460m hospital on the current site.

    Arrests have been made concerning "ancillary matters" by police investigating the case of missing Latvian national Mikus Alps, Guernsey Police's chief officer has confirmed.

    The 33-year-old was last seen in the early hours of Monday 8 January, the same day a car registered to him was discovered burnt out, containing human remains and a shotgun.

    At a press conference, Patrick Rice said: "There have been arrests made, not necessarily linked to this investigation.

    "There are ancillary matters that we have investigated.

    "A person has been charged and is currently remanded in custody."

    Guernsey's senior police officer has appealed for islanders to avoid speculating and spreading rumours as investigations into the discovery of human remains in a burnt out car continue.

    Guernsey's head of law enforcement, Patrick Rice, said he would "not normally comment on rumour and speculation" and international media reports, but the level around this case was "fairly unprecedented".

    He urged those posting online or passing on rumours to be "mindful of the impact such speculation has on those who have potentially lost a loved one".

    Guernsey Police are still appealing for information concerning Mikus Alps, the 33-year-old missing in Guernsey.

    A car belonging to Mr Alps was found burnt out in a secluded part of Petit Bot, St Martin, last Monday.

    Police confirmed parts of human bone and a shotgun were retrieved from the vehicle.

    Mr Alps, a Latvian national, moved to Guernsey in 2005, police chief Patrick Rice confirmed in a press conference this afternoon.

    He worked in the motor trade and lived with his mother, he added.

    A letter purportedly from missing Latvian man Mikus Alps has been received by Guernsey Police, officers say.

    Chief Officer Patrick Rice would not confirm its contents but said it was “sombre and reflective”.

    Handwriting experts were analysing the letter, he added.

    He also confirmed a shotgun was recovered from the burnt-out car.

    The vehicle belonged to Mr Alps, 33, who was last seen in the early hours of Monday 8 January, police said.

    The force found the car near Petit Bot, St Martin, that morning.
