  5. States to examine adding Coop to new retail taxpublished at 17:27 GMT 30 November 2017

    BBC Radio Jersey

Jersey's government will examine whether the Channel Islands Coop should pay a new retail tax on its Jersey profits along with other large retailers.

    Coop Grande Marche

The new tax is part of the 2018 budget currently being debated by politicians in the States of Jersey.

Currently it is exempt from the new tax as it has mutual status and so is not classed as a business like other retailers.

Former treasury minister, Senator Philip Ozouf, said it should be taxed like other large retailers as it would have an unfair advantage in the island market over other food businesses.

The budget debate continues today including calls for a review of the alcohol industry in the island and is available to listen to on the BBC News budget live page.

    BBC Radio Guernsey

The developers of a project to connect France and Britain's electricity grids using a cable going across the channel and running through Alderney have submitted an application to the States of Guernsey for an alternative route.

In a statement the FAB link project developers say due to the delays of Alderney's Land Use Plan and continuing uncertainty around whether they can submit a planning application for cables they have had to come up with an alternative that avoids landing the cable in Alderney.

FAB development manager Chris Jenner says the new application does not mean the cable could not still go through Alderney and talks are still ongoing with the islands government to find a solution.

Deputy Lester Queripel and Deputy Joe Mooney say they put forward the amendment after being approached by many islanders who believe taxpayers' money shouldn't be sent overseas when the States are "struggling to support those locally".

  17. Online retailers to be urged to charge GSTpublished at 13:45 GMT 30 November 2017

    Ryan Morrison
    BBC News Online

Politicians in Jersey have agreed to urge online retailers and digital companies such as Amazon, Netflix and Mothercare to charge Jersey's Goods and Services Tax rather than UK Value Added Tax which isn't applicable to Jersey purchases.

The proposal came from former treasury minister Senator Philip Ozouf as an amendment to the 2018 budget.

He said the goal was to bring down the cost of living for islanders by encouraging companies to charge GST at 5% rather than VAT at 20%.

A number of companies charge the same price in Jersey for products sold to Jersey as they do when being sold within the UK, despite VAT not being chargeable in the island.

States members could still reject plans to apply a 20% tax on the profits of Jersey's largest retailers.

Jersey's politicians are still debating the 2018 budget which includes plans by the treasury to get more tax from businesses and wealthy islanders.

    Emma Chambers
    BBC Channel Islands News

An inquest into the death of Clinton Pringle, who was knocked down by a driver in St Helier last year, found that he died from multiple injuries.

The three-year-old was with his mother, aunt and cousins when he crossed the shared space area along Tunnel Street heading for the Millennium Town Park.

The inquest heard it was a route the family, that was on holiday in Jersey from Scotland, had not used before.

Deputy Viscount Mark Harris heard a statement from the boy's aunt Melissa Anderson, who said they'd taken that path as it was "safer than Bath street, which is busy and has a narrow pavement".

Clinton was hit by a van driven by Rebekah le Gal. She was acquitted of causing death by dangerous driving, but pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving and was given an eight-month suspended sentence.

A post-mortem report by forensic pathologist Dr Russell Delaney concluded that Clinton had been severely injured. Dr Delaney said due to the nature of those injuries he believed Clinton would have been instantly unconscious, and would not had been aware of what had happened.

He died three days later in Southampton hospital. The inquest continues.
