  2. Efforts made to preserve 'unique' parts of bunkerpublished at 17:54 BST 27 October 2017

    A group that preserves and records German bunkers in Guernsey has been granted access to a command post in the south west of the island.

    Festung Guernsey is investigating, measuring and taking pictures of the post at Les Islets in St Peter before a house is built on its roof.

    Paul Bourgaize from the group said the Guernsey Housing Association did the "right thing" in allowing them access before work starts.

    He said they were able to identify parts of the bunker as unique to the island, and the association was making efforts to retain these areas.

  3. Volunteers launch survey in Alderney on green belt land changespublished at 17:45 BST 27 October 2017

    Volunteers from the Alderney Wildlife Trust and the Alderney Society are conducting a survey on planned changes to the island's green belt.

    The groups hope the survey will establish people's views on the green belt and what they would like to change.

    Last month the groups raised concerns over changes to the wording of the island's Land Use Plan, external, which they claimed could allow development on currently protected land.

    The survey will be carried out in Victoria Street over the next few weeks.

  4. Changes to inter-island flights timespublished at 17:37 BST 27 October 2017

    The schedules of flights between Guernsey and Jersey are being changed following feedback from passengers and the business community.

    Rob Veron, Blue Islands CEO, said: "Demand was clearly shown for afternoon return flights to be even later, and that’s why we are pushing these services back by 30 minutes, allowing people to get even more out of their day’s travel."

    He said the company "knows how important the inter-island route is" and "where we can be flexible and make changes our customers tell us they want to see, we will do that".

    From 4 December the evening service from Jersey to Guernsey services will be scheduled at 16:40 and 18:00 and from Guernsey to Jersey at 17:20 and 18:40.

  5. 'Action plan' in place to improve poor hygiene care homespublished at 17:22 BST 27 October 2017

    An action plan has been put in place at two Guernsey care homes that received the lowest hygiene scores in a recent test, the States has said.

    Both Shotley Villa and Les Alouettes received a one star rating in the Environmental Health survey.

    A spokesman for the Committee for Health and Social care said the States was working on Shorley Villa, and Les Alouettes had undergone "a number of positive changes".

    Adding: "We will be asking environmental health to re-inspect the facility as soon as possible."

    He said he was confident improvements could quickly be made and apologised expected standards had not been maintained.

  7. Jersey chief minister to 'emphasise value' of EU relationshippublished at 17:09 BST 27 October 2017

    On Monday the Chief Minister of Jersey, Senator Ian Gorst, will meet with the Permanent Representations to the EU of six Member States: Cyprus, France, Ireland, Italy, Romania, and the United Kingdom.

    The Deputy Chief Minister of Guernsey, Deputy Lyndon Trott, will also be at the meeting and has said he wants to emphasis the island's commitment to tax transparency.

    Mr Gorst said: "Given the ongoing Brexit negotiations and present deliberations by the EU Code of Conduct Group on matters of tax transparency, it is a timely opportunity to hear their views and respond to their questions.

    "I want to emphasise the value we place, as an island, on our relationships within Europe, and that we want these to continue to flourish beyond Brexit."

    He added: "Jersey has a very good story to tell on matters of tax transparency and regulation.

    I anticipate productive dialogue with the council members to understand any concerns and to provide reassurance on our commitment to transparency."

  8. Guernsey deputies given funding to investigate 'two-school model'published at 16:55 BST 27 October 2017

    A group of deputies in favour of a two-school model has been given £93,000 by the Policy and Resources Committee to investigate the option.

    The Education, Sport and Culture Committee is due to bring its proposals, external for the future of secondary education in the island to the States on 13 November.

    However, following a meeting with Deputies Matt Fallaize, Rhian Tooley, Richard Graham and Mark Dorey, the States most senior committee has agreed the two-school model should also be investigated.

    The education committee is opposed to the plans, preferring its proposed three-school system.

  9. Two Guernsey care homes require 'major improvement' in hygienepublished at 16:42 BST 27 October 2017

    Two Guernsey care homes have received the lowest possible hygiene score for their kitchens.

    Shotley Villa, in St Sampson, and Les Alouettes, in the Castel, both scored one star on the environmental health "scores on the doors" list, along with six other establishments.

    The one rating means "major improvements" are necessary at the facility.

    Tobin Cook, from Environmental Health, said Les Alouettes had "a number of structural issues" and was currently closed in order to "upgrade the property", whilst Shotley Villa had problems with "practices" and "paperwork".

    Guernsey Electricity has been granted permission to demolish four cottages in Vale Avenue.

    Vale Deputy, Mary Lowe, said it was "fantastic news" after a decade of campaigning.

    Four dwellings and two outbuildings owned by the company are now able to be taken down.

    Plans to clear the site were stalled due to legislation that said the buildings could not be demolished until planning approval for the site’s future had been given.

    Guernsey Electricity said it could not produce these plans because it wanted to "maximise the opportunities presented by fast developing energy technology".

    Three previous planning applications were rejected for the development.

    Alan Bates, chief executive at Guernsey Electricity said: "It’s the best option, and will benefit both neighbours and the wider community."

  12. Call for States to spend more on controlling Asian Hornetspublished at 16:08 BST 27 October 2017

    The States needs to spend more on controlling Asian Hornet nests in Jersey, a scientist has said.

    Biologist and environmentalist Dr John Feltman from the UK was present at a recent attempt by Jersey beekeepers to block up and freeze a nest for scientific study.

    He said gathering more scientific evidence on the hornets was "important" in order to work out how to control them.

    Dr Feltman said the island's authorities need to start thinking about how they will deal with someone getting stung after disturbing a nest, and emergency services should be prepared.

  13. Concerns over infrastructure levy 'ignored'published at 15:55 BST 27 October 2017

    Business leaders in Jersey have said their concerns about a new tax on people developing their land have been ignored.

    Details of the Infrastructure Levy were released last week, external and are due to be debated in the States later this year.

    Last month the Chamber of Commerce criticised the Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce, for not waiting for a scrutiny review on the policy, and now says he is showing a "lack of respect" for those willing to give up their time to comment on the plans.

    The levy aims to bring in money to the States from the profits made on rising land values.

    But the chamber says the added charge will harm the building industry, jobs and the economy.

    The minister said all comments gathered during the 12-week consultation were worked through before the plans were finalised.

  14. Police appeal after scooter 'driven into wall'published at 15:42 BST 27 October 2017

    Guernsey Police are appealing for witnesses following a crash involving a scooter earlier this month.

    Officers said the scooter was driven into a wall after swerving away from another vehicle pulling out of an estate on La Couture, St Peter Port.

    It happened at about 21:00 on the 13 October.

  15. Jersey teen volunteer to host award ceremonypublished at 15:22 BST 27 October 2017

    A teenager from Jersey who was given a Diana Award, external for services to his community has been chosen to host the awards ceremony next year.

    Tom Hughes,16, won the award for his voluntary work with St John Ambulance, and received it in London earlier this month.

    He has volunteered with the charity for seven years and has completed more than 400 hours of duty at public events.

    After receiving his award, Mr Hughes was also given special permission to visit Number 10 Downing Street.

    Andium Homes is spending £3m improving safety standards in its high-rise buildings, the States has said.

    The government's housing company said it was putting its tenants safety first by installing sprinkler systems in its high-rise buildings in Jersey.

    Chairman Frank Walker said the company was "taking the initiative" as it anticipated sprinkler systems may be made compulsory in tower blocks in the UK following the Grenfell Tower fire in June.

    He said all Andium buildings "exceed safety standards" and tenants have nothing to be concerned about.

    A visiting scientist has commended the efforts of Jersey beekeepers in tracking and helping pest controllers to remove Asian hornet nests around the island.

    Biologist and environmentalist Dr John Feltman said the States should be "very grateful" for the contribution the Jersey beekeepers are making "in attempting to control Asian hornets".

    Dr Feltman was present at the recent attempt by beekeepers to block up and freeze a nest for scientific study, which he said was "important" in order to work out how to tackle the hornets.

    He added methods of tracking developed by beekeeper Bob Hogge would eventually result in a "sensible plan" for dealing with the hornets, which could be rolled out to the UK.

    It happened in Castel within the last two weeks.

    Officers said information leading to the Cornavin watch being found could result in a reward.
