Coastal erosion affecting a islet on Guernsey's west coast was a "major factor" in finding out more about its history.
Capelle Dom Hue was one of the island's prehistoric landmarks and historians said it could have religious significance.
States archaeologist Dr Philip de Jersey said on-site studies were the only way to explain the islet's history before it was too late.

One of the politicians taking part in negotiations with the developers of the France-Alderney-Britain electricity link has said the island could benefit substantially more from the project.
If States members agree later this month, islanders will be asked whether they want the project to include the island, in the full knowledge of how much it will benefit financially.
Graham McKinley believes the £500,000 per year currently on the table is significantly less than Alderney should receive for allowing the cable to run through the island.
FAB Link Ltd has surveyed an alternative offshore route after delays in approving the project, which will now go to a public vote.
Mr McKinley said: "I want us to make considerably more money out of this.
"We could be making something like £700k-a-week, which is over £36m-a-year," he said.

New offences, including a simplified law on rape, could come into force in Jersey next year.
Home Affairs Minister Kristina Moore wants the public to comment on proposed changes.
The law is due to provide clearer definitions for rape and what constitutes consent.
Minister Moore said she hoped the changes reflected modern society.

Nearly half the prisoners held at La Moye Prison in Jersey are repeat offenders, a Freedom of Information request has revealed, external.
The request revealed 47 out of the 100 prisoners who were inside last month had been imprisoned in Jersey before.
The request asked about the number of prisoners held at La Moye, and how long they were serving.
On 16 August, 29 prisoners were serving sentences for drug dealing, 26 for sexual offences, 25 for other violence crimes, and two for burglary.
Thirty of the inmates were serving sentences of between five and 10 years, while five were serving sentences of more than 10 years.

Aurigny is now allowing passengers to carry two pieces of hand luggage on Guernsey, UK and Grenoble services, instead of one.
But the airline has said the weight allowance per traveller remained the same at 10kg.

Guernsey States is looking for a biodiversity education officer for the next two years.
The new position, with an advertised salary of £30,000+ a year, will involve working with others to encourage new projects and practical conservation measures, officials said.
Principal environmental services officer Andy McCutcheon said candidates needed to be able to explain issues facing local habitats.

A woman was verbally abused by a group of five or six teenagers on mountain bikes in St Helier, police say.
She was approaching Pier Road car park from the Mulcaster Street junction on Wednesday, between 15:00 and 15:30, when she found the teenagers were blocking the pavement ahead.
Officers said the woman, who was in her 20s, asked the group to move and they followed her to the car park shouting abuse before getting into a lift with their bikes.
They are described as white European and between the ages of 13 to 16.
One of the young people was wearing a red hooded top, and another had distinctive narrow rectangular glasses.
Police are appealing for witnesses.

Margaret Warren-Roberts is so concerned by the France-Britain-Alderney power project, she's put anti-FAB Link posters up in her car and on her house windows.
If politicians agree on 13 September, there will be a public vote on whether Alderney is included in the £500m electricity project linking Britain and France. The politicians, though, will have the final say.
"It would destroy this island, both the environment and the way of life," she said.
Those behind the project said it would bring economic prosperity to the island.
Margaret said she wasn't buying it.
"We've survived in the past without it and we'll survive in the future," she said.

A group of St Sampson's residents are protesting a planning application to build houses in the Delancey area on St Clair Hill.
If approved, the first stage of the project will see 83 homes built.
But a member of a conservation group in the area, Peter Voute, claims 150 will be built by the time the project is complete.
He said he felt the density was "unacceptably high" and would cause an increase in traffic and parking.

A man arrested after suspected cannabis with an estimated street value of £150,000 was found in a vehicle is due to appear at Jersey's Royal Court next month.
Officers from the Customs and Immigration Service said they found 10kg of the suspected drug in a vehicle travelling on the Condor Liberation from Poole on Thursday.
A 59-year-old, charged with offences under Jersey's customs and excise laws, appeared in the Magistrate's Court this morning. He is due to appear in the Royal Court on 13 October.
