The Director of Civil Aviation for the Channel Islands has said they'll be keeping a close eye on developments in the UK over regulations governing drones.

The government announced the introduction of a registration system for drones amid growing concern about the dangers they pose to aircraft.

Under the new rules, owners will have to attend safety awareness courses.

Gus Paterson believes this will be difficult to enforce and he would like to see a "common sense" approach adopted locally.

Jersey's mental health services are expecting to see even more patients this year than in 2016, when consultants saw more than 1,700 people.

Acting head Dr Cheryl Power said the number is expected to be higher again in 2017.

Demand for the service has meant those suffering trauma from childhood abuse have had to wait four weeks for an assessment, and up to 18 weeks for any treatment.

Jersey Reds chairman Mark Morgan says the Championship side has had to lose a "significant chunk" of its playing budget to cut costs.

Last season's British & Irish Cup runners-up sold its assets for £1.5m in November to see out the campaign.

"The biggest expense we have is the playing squad, so we have taken money out of that," Morgan told BBC Radio Jersey.

"Just remember what happened to London Welsh, and have a look back over the past few seasons at the problems other clubs have had."

Jersey Under-19s are on the brink of defeat in their opening match of qualifying for next year's cricket World Cup.

Playing against Ireland, Jersey bowled well and restricted their opponents to 200-9 at Farmers.

However, they have struggled with the bat, and are 123-9 with 12 overs remaining, needing a big turnaround to get something from the game.

Two Guernsey committees have responded to questions about a potential identified saving of £600,000 a year achieved through merging the fire and ambulance services.

The Health and Social Care Committee said, external the idea was considered in a report that went to the States in February 2016 and was not considered appropriate then.

It said the group behind that report found "a number [of] potential risks" and cautioned against Guernsey pioneering an integrated service invovling "disproportionate effort and cost".

The committee did say it would consider the changes if "there be sufficient evidence to indicate that such a change would be financially beneficial and deliverable in a way which would not adversely impact service delivery or impose substantial risk".

The Home Affairs Committee said it "would welcome further discussion with [the health] committee in relation to any such review if it was considered to be of merit".

It said, external the figure of £600,000 did not take into account some of the risks involved and the estimate £6.1m investment needed for a merger.

The body recovered from the water in St Peter Port Harbour on Sunday is "not being treated as suspicious at this stage" said a police spokesman.

He said: "A post mortem was carried out today and formal identification is scheduled to take place tomorrow afternoon."

Three midwives accused of blunders in the deaths of two babies on a scandal-hit maternity ward are expected to hear their fates at the end of the week.

The death of one child in Guernsey might have been prevented if another fatality two years before had been properly investigated, the Nursing and Midwifery Council has heard.

Lisa Granville, Antonia Manousaki and Tuija Roussel have admitted some charges while denying others.

The midwives were working on the Loveridge Ward at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital and followed a culture described as "The Guernsey Way".

Michael Coleman, panel chair for the NMC, said: "Come what may we will reconvene on Friday morning at the earliest and we will let you know what position we are in to hand down facts."

A Guernsey Deputy is calling on the States to give equal consideration to both options when it comes to picking a new school model., external

The options have been narrowed down to just two proposals from an original six, but Deputy David De Lisle from the Education, Sport and Culture Committee thinks there needs to be proper debate on option 2.

Option 1 includes three high school sites, and the island's grammar school moving to over sixteens only.

The more costly option 2 involves retaining 11-19 teaching on the grammar site, and not rebuilding La Mare de Carteret.

The issue will come before the States at the end of the year.

Guernsey rugby side the Raiders have announced their first pre-season fixture against Championship club Doncaster Knights.

The Greens welcome Doncaster on 5 August 2017.

Raiders are looking to build on their highest ever finish in the RFU National 3 London and Southeast last season.

Doncaster finished fourth last season, a place above island rivals Jersey.

The CEO of Sure has paid tribute to colleague Stuart Moorat, 27, who died in a car crash on Friday evening.

Mr Moorat's girlfriend, 25-year-old Georgina Le Prevost, also died at the scene of the crash on the Perelle coast road. No other vehicles were involved.

Ian Kelly described Mr Moorat, who worked at the company for nearly eight years, as "a popular member of the Sure family."

"He will be sorely missed by his colleagues and friends here," he said.

"Our thoughts and condolences go out to his and Georgina Le Prevost’s families at this tragic time.”

Guernsey Police are appealing for information after a shop window was damaged in St Peter Port during the weekend.

Police say the damage occurred to one of the front windows at Millets, in the Pollet, between 17:45 on Friday and 03:00 on Saturday.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact Guernsey Police or Crimestoppers, anonymously.
