The Jersey Coastguard have responded to requests by the public to identify what the orange boards are that are dotted around the coast."
The coastguard said: "These are called transit marks, and are used as navigational marks for vessels entering or leaving a port or harbour, and ensure that mariners are able to safely navigate in hazards areas."
They are used to indicate the safest route, but should be used with caution, depending on tidal heights.
And they're orange because ... it's just easier to see them.

A vigil will be held in Jersey in memory of the victims of the Manchester arena bombing, and in support of the survivors, the Bailiff's Chambers has announced.
On Monday at 19:00, members of the public are encouraged to join the Bailiff, the Lieutenant Governor and States members in the Royal Square.
A book of condolences in the States Building will remain open until 20:00 after the vigil.

Channel Island businesses are being warned by local IT experts that their computer systems need to be up to scratch to avoid breaches that could be punished with big fines under new EU data protection laws due this time next year.
The recent ransomware attack on the NHS in the UK has refocused minds in the IT security industry.

A campaigner for better quality of life for people with disabilities has said, given the time it has taken to come up with a disability strategy, Jersey States members should implement it before the 2018 election.
The strategy was to promote equality for disabled Islanders and aimed to ensure that people living with disability could enjoy a good quality of life, those behind it said.
Following research and consultation, it has been developed in partnership between the government, voluntary and community organisations, and the business community.

Jersey's Council of Ministers has approved budget increases for the Jersey Financial Crime Strategy Group (JFCSG) from 2017 through to 2019 by £870,000.
The JFCSG is responsible for tackling financial crime on the island.
A spokesperson said the extra funds would pay for more staff for members of the group, including the States of Jersey Police and the customs authority.
The money will also go towards funding a new Economic Crime and Confiscation Unit, which will provide specialist complex case investigative capability within the Attorney-General's Department.

The president of Guernsey's Policy and Resources Committee has assured islanders that breaching a rule on borrowing against a bond taken out by the government was in the interests of States' finances.
It comes following the publication of an independent review into the States of Guernsey bond issue, which the Scrutiny Management Committee said raises concerns about a lack of due diligence.
Gavin St Pier said States members and others were aware that the bond issue would breach the rule on borrowing above the limit in a given year.

A group has objected to the proposed development of Jersey's Wayside site in St Brelade's Bay.
Developers want to demolish the Wayside cafe and two homes, and build a new restaurant, a surf shop and seven homes on the site.
The St Brelade's Bay Association said the plans were insensitive to the bay as a beauty spot and tourist destination.
MS Planning, which is working on the development, said it was trying to "revitalize the bay".

Jersey Heritage has developed an app to help tourists and locals discover more about the island
The free Jersey Offline mApp doesn't incur roaming charges for tourists and uses GPS to navigate people to various attractions around the island, including guided walks.
Jersey Heritage said it commissioned the app after 50% of surveyed visitors indicated a strong demand for Jersey to be accessible via mobile technology offline.

People in Jersey have got less than two hours to hand in their tax returns to Cyril le Marquand House before the deadline at 18:00.
Anyone who misses the deadline will be fined £250. But, if an approved tax agent acts on anyone's behalf, their deadline is Friday 28 July.

John Baudains, the current head of Mont Nicolle Primary School, will be moving to La Moye School in September, the Education Department has announced.

Mr Baudains said he was "thrilled" to be moving to the school, and that it had been an "absolute pleasure" to work at Mont Nicolle.
Education Minister Deputy Rod Bryans said: "This is an excellent choice and great news for La Moye. Of course, I would like to thank Mrs Bell-Cook who has led the school for the past eight years. A generation of students there have benefitted from good educational standards under her leadership."

There will be no passenger-only inter-island ferry service this summer due to a lack of funding from Guernsey, a Jersey deputy has said.
Minister for Economic Development, Tourism Sport and Culture Lyndon Farnham said after Guernsey confirmed that it would be unable to fund its share of the trial service, that it was "not viable".
Senator Farnham said that he was "disappointed" but "remained determined to improve inter-island passenger links" as they were important not only for developing both islands' economies but to maintain social and cultural links.
Deputy Matt Faillaize, from the States of Guernsey, said: "A daily inter-island ferry service for this summer was well within our grasp. It had the support of the operator and the States of Jersey, but the States of Guernsey refused to provide the necessary support. I find this beyond frustrating. It is an extremely foolish decision."

The overall number of visitors to Jersey fell by four per cent in the first quarter of this year, but substantially more people are now coming to the Island for winter leisure breaks, a report has revealed, external.

Herm could be a contender in having the world's largest echium plant after gardener Shannon Murray measured one in his garden at 15.74ft (4.79m).
The Guinness Book of World Records says an echium would need to grow to at least 23ft (7m) in order for a special award to be created.
A few years ago Mr Murray said he found one on the island that came to 22.5ft (6.8m) before collapsing under its own weight.

A 29-year-old man from High Wycombe been sentenced to six years and three months in prison for attempting to import cannabis valued at almost £1m on to the island.
Shane Lee Ray was charged with attempting to bring almost 60kg of cannabis resin into Jersey via Elizabeth Ferry Terminal on 13 January.

A Guernsey Police chief inspector is stepping down after 27 years.
Ch Insp Antonia Read said the career break was to focus on her young family.
Her promotion to chief inspector in 2013 made her the first female officer to be promoted to that rank in Guernsey, police said.
The president of the Home Affairs Committee, Deputy Mary Lowe, said: "Chief Inspector Read has touched the lives of many islanders during her time within Guernsey Police.
"Her work, particularly in the area of child protection, has made a real difference to the lives of many. Her hard work and dedication have been of great benefit to the island, and she will be sorely missed.
"I wish her every happiness and success for the future."
