A smoker "sparked a fire around her mouth" when she tried to light a small pipe while attached to an oxygen feed.
Image source, Getty ImagesDiane Lesley Noel, 64, from St Peter in Jersey, died from shock last October when the miniature explosion caused her heart and lungs to fail, an inquest heard.
The inquest, held at Morier House in St Helier today, heard Mrs Noel had been suffering from chronic lung disease for years and was "warned to stop".
Advocate Cyril Whelan heard Mrs Noel had a previous scare a few years earlier from smoking while using her oxygen, and that Mr Noel said he thought she had "learned her lesson".
On the 20 October 2016 a neighbour called the Fire Service after Mrs Noel's flat's fire alarm sounded for 45 minutes.
Mrs Noel was declared dead two hours later.

Industrial hemp, a variety of cannabis that is used in industrial products such as doors and insulation, could be a major feature of Jersey's agriculture industry if a trial is successful according to an environment department spokesman.
Image source, ReutersIndustrial Hemp Partnership has been given a one season licence to grow four varieties of hemp to see how well it grows in the island. It will take up just over a hectare of land during the trial.
Scott Meadows, head of plant health at the Jersey Environment Department, said the varieties given a licence have a very low psychoactive component.
The licence was granted as part of the rural economy strategy, aimed at diversifying the ecology of the island beyond dairy and potatoes.

"Extensive consultation" has taken place with local businesses about the effects of new population legislation according to Guernsey's Home Affairs Committee.
Its response follows comment from the owner of the St Pierre Park Hotel, who called for some employment restrictions to be lifted for off-island workers in the hospitality industry.
Hotelier Julia Hands fears talented staff will be attracted to destinations with long-term career prospects and the chance to build a life. She says relaxing the rules in Guernsey for live-in staff would be a positive start.
Home Affairs President, Deputy Mary Lowe, says her team remains "committed" to working with the business community to make sure policies meet the needs of industry wherever possible.
She says current laws reflect the need to retain staff within the hospitality sector who are part of a formal succession plan into senior roles. Deputy Lowe says this will ensure the long term continuity that Mrs Hands wants.

A Jerseyman who was one of only two British people to survive the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp was laid to rest in a pauper's grave in Nottingham.
Image source, Stan KeillerFrank Le Villio was born in Jersey and aged 19 was deported to France after taking a joy ride on the motorbike of a German officer during the Nazi occupation of the island.
He was then moved to Bergen-Belsen and after it was liberated he settled in Nottingham only to die a year later of tuberculosis.
The location of his final resting place wasn't well known until historian Stan Keiller discovered it while researching Frank's life story. The grave was completely unmarked until the local vicar placed a small cross to mark the location.

A licence has been granted for a farm in Jersey to grow industrial hemp, a member of the cannabis family but with very low psychoactive properties, to be used in the production of cooking oil and industrial materials.
Image source, ReutersScott Meadows, head of plant health at the Jersey Environment Department, said they were approached by the Industrial Hemp Partnership (IHP) wanting to look at the growth of the hemp for construction materials.
IHP will work with a local grower and the department who will monitor and research the output to make sure it meets necessary requirements.
Mr Meadows said: "Industrial hemp is a different creature to recreational cannabis, it has very low, even vanishing levels of THC which is the psychoactive aspects of cannabis.
"It is a very tall, fibrous plants and when it is proceeded can be made into car door linings, industrial panels and other products."

Aspiring GPs will be able to do their training placement in Jersey if politicians approve a law change.
Currently doctors wanting to become a GP have to go to the UK to do the compulsory surgery placement.
Health Minister, Senator Andrew Green, has proposed the change which is described as an "exciting advancement". It needs to be approved by the States Assembly before it can come into force.
A health spokesman said they also hope to encourage as many local GPs to become accredited trainers and practices to become accredited as suitable learning organisations. He said the move would help expand the local workforce.

A cable importing electricity from France, which runs between Jersey and Guernsey, will be switched off on Friday so Guernsey Electricity can carry out "essential maintenance".
Work will start on 12 May and will take about two weeks to complete. It will include work on the Barkers Quarry substation and other work in Jersey and France.
The cable will be pulled up so it can be inspected and then reburied to ensure it is in full working order.

Guernsey's government needs to do more work on mental health prevention according to a member of the Health and Social Care Committee.
The issue was raised by mental health charity Guernsey Mind who said the government was good at dealing with people going through a crisis, but prevention was lacking.

Le Vauquiedor remains closed to through traffic and from this afternoon until Saturday access to Princess Elizabeth Hospital will be blocked.

A new public footpath on the northern end of the Jersey Airport runway has been opened in St Peter today.
It is part of a four-year major redevelopment project of land surrounding the airport designed to improve safety. The project cost £1.5m and was paid for by government-owned Ports of Jersey.
The project involved buying and demolishing two nearby bungalows, changing a nearby road to create the 3m wide footpath and transferring fields from the airport to the parish.

A historian who found the grave of a survivor of Bergen-Belsen hopes to arrange for a better memorial to the man.
Image source, Jersey HeritageFrank Le Villio was arrested in Jersey in 1944 for taking a joyride on a German soldier's motorbike. He was sent to a French prison but later ended up in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp.
He died at the age of 21 in Nottingham of tuberculosis a year after being liberated from the camp and historian Stanley Keiller found he was buried in a pauper's grave in the city.
He says after finding it the grave was cleaned up by the local vicar but he hopes a larger more permanent memorial can be put up.

Buses won't be running to the Princes Elizabeth Hospital in Guernsey from today until Saturday.
It's because the Vauquiedor is closed both ways and traffic is using the Oberlands entrance.
CT Plus says that's too narrow and too busy for buses to use to get to the hospital.

Jersey firefighters are taking the States to outside arbitration in a dispute over pay.
They're unhappy at last year's public sector pay rise of 1% which was imposed on most States employees.
Because the Fire Service is not allowed to go on strike, they have a special provision which means any pay dispute must be settled by the Jersey Arbitration and Conciliation Service.

Developers in Jersey hope to buy a piece of church-owned land in St Brelade for the redevelopment of Les Quennevais School.
They're asking St Brelade parishioners to sell the field close to the cemetery and main road.
Under Jersey's system it is up to parishioners in a parish hall meeting to decide whether to sell public or church land.
The school is being built on farmland near the airport football pitch in St Brelade.

Mental health provision in Guernsey is disjointed according to a Guernsey mental health charity.
