Doctors at Jersey General Hospital have warned islanders of the increased risk people of 50 face from bowel cancer.
Dr David Ng said: "There is an increase in people under the age of 50 being affected by bowel cancer, and the lifetime risk of cancer is that it affects one in 15 men and one in 17 women.
"It is the fourth most common cancer. Bowel cancer can occur in younger people, but eight out of 10 people who get cancer of the bowel are over the age of 60."
He added: "There is absolutely no need for anyone who is worried about a change in their bowel habits to be worried about seeing their GP.
"Your GP will not be embarrassed and neither should you be."
The States of Jersey offers free bowel cancer tests to people from the age of 60.

A man has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison by Jersey's Royal Court.
Karn Damien Laffoley, 42, from Jersey, pleaded guilty to making, possessing and distributing indecent images of children as well as breaching restrictions previously set on him.
He had been on the sex offender registrar since 2009 prior to the verdict.
His latest offence involves 434 images, 19 of the level 4 category, which is the second most severe.
On passing sentence Jersey's Bailiff William Bailhache said: "It's for the protection of society and for yourself."

The Office of the Chief Minister of Jersey has responded to recent reforms proposed by a senator.
The reforms restrict any one person serving, or acting as chief minister for more than two terms.
The proposals are similar to the rules used in republican systems of government such as France and America.
The Office of the Chief Minister has said there is "no need" for a term limit as the Queen is the head of state.

Islanders with faulty tumble dryers are being offered an "alternative option", Guernsey Electricity said.
Guernsey Electricity recently wrote to tumble dryer manufacturer Whirlpool to urge them to do more to resolve the ongoing issue with some models.
A safety defect was identified in November 2015 and since then Whirlpool has been dealing with an estimated 3.8 million potentially faulty machines across the UK, including thousands in the Channel Islands.

Police have described a man sentenced today in Jersey's Royal Court as a "predator".
Karn Laffoley, 42-year-old, was sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison after he plead guilty to multiple counts of distributing images of children being sexually abused, and breaking restraining orders.
Image source, States of Jersey PoliceLaffoley had been in and out of jail in the UK and Jersey over the past eight years for making and distributing indecent images of children.
One of the victims, a nine-year-old girl, was abused after Laffoley contacted her mother on a online dating website.
The mother then began sending indecent images and movies of her daughter to him.
Police described Leffoley as "a predator, grooming a woman in order to obtain images of an innocent child. His behaviour is nothing short of abhorrent".

Doctors at Jersey General Hospital are encouraging islanders to see their GP if they notice "any change in their bowel habits".
Dr David Ng said there is "no need" for anyone to worry about seeing their GP, "Your GP will not be embarrassed and neither should you be.
"We just want people to get the treatment and reassurance they need, when they need it."
The message comes as part of a campaign over April to raise awareness of the risks of bowel cancer.
A States of Jersey spokesman said: "Around 20 people die in Jersey every year from bowel cancer."

The parents of Guernsey woman Sarah Groves, who was killed in Kashmir, have said they have "more confidence" in the public prosecutor representing their daughter in her murder trial.
Today is the fourth anniversary of her death.
The 24-year-old was stabbed to death on a houseboat in April 2013.
Sarah's father Vic Groves said he was hopeful the new prosecutor would be able to speed up the trial of the man accused of her murder.
Dutch national Richard De Witt was charged with her murder but he denies killing her.

A Jersey Farmer says a mild winter and less rain at the beginning of the year has meant more grass than usual.
It is a bonus for Jersey farmers as lush fields mean they don't have to buy as much food for their herds.
Andrew Le Gallais, who farms in St Saviour, said the good conditions are also good for dairy farmers, as the grass his cattle are grazing on will be more nutritious.

Planners have refused to recommend plans to develop the privately owned Pulias Vinery, opposite the Pond near the Ronez Quarry.

The head of the committee said it was made clear from Deputy Heidi Soulsby that a review would not be forthcoming.

Guernsey's chief minister said he was "delighted" to welcome Sir Oliver Heald MP to the island.
The UK minister had previously said he was "very disappointed" to have to defer his visit to Alderney, due to mechanical problems with his flight from Southampton to the island.
He has served as minister of state at the Ministry of Justice with responsibility for the Crown dependencies since 2016.
