Mali twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with Uganda in Group D of the African Nations Championship (Chan) in Rwanda.

Uganda opened the scoring after just 11 minutes when Joseph Ochaya headed home a free-kick from captain Farouk Miya.

Mali drew level halfway through the first half through Sekou Koita, whose control in the area took him past a defender before he fired past Ismail Watenga in the Ugandan goal.

Then four minutes before half-time Miya scored from the penalty spot for Uganda after Erisa Ssekisambu was fouled in the area.

However, there was bad news for Uganda coach Milutin Micho Sredojevic at half-time when injury forced Miya to be replaced by Muzamiru Mutyaba.

There was another injury blow for Uganda shortly after the break when goalkeeper Watenga pulled a muscle while taking a goal-kick, with Mathias Kigonya coming on instead.

Mali equalised on the hour mark through striker Hamidou Sinayok as he managed to get his foot on the ball and divert it into the net.

The authorities in Nigeria say 72 people have so far died in a Lassa fever outbreak since August and 212 are suffering from the disease.

Health Minister Isaac Adewole warned that unless adequate measures were quickly put in place, the disease could spread to other parts of the country.

So far the disease has been reported in 17 out of the 36 states in the country.

It is transmitted to humans from rodents that harbour the virus. The most common complication of the virus is deafness.

Ghana’s president has sacked two senior court judges following a judicial corruption scandal.

Ajet Nasam and Ernest Obimpeh were among 12 high court justices implicated in allegations of bribery stemming from a documentary made by undercover investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Last month, 21 magistrates judges of the lower court were also fired after a committee investigating them found them guilty of taking bribes uncovered in the same probe.

Nigeria has lost more than $3bn (£2.1bn) to tax breaks given to European oil and gas companies over the last three years, the charity ActionAid says in a report launched today.

ActionAid Nigeria’s Ojobo Atuluku said that money could have been spent on helping save young lives in Nigeria where almost 15 out of every 100 children die of preventable diseases before the age of five.

“That $3.3bn could have covered the health care budget last year twice – or it could have covered the education budget,” she told the BBC.

The report also said that the money lost on incentives given to investors could also be channeled into education.

Despite an increase in the enrolment rates in recent years, the international charity says approximately 11 million children are out of school.

Almost half of the Nigerian population of 167 million is under 15 years old, which puts enormous pressure on the educational system.

Mohammed Yakub, deputy director of Nigeria’s finance ministry, said the covered ideas already being considered by the government.

The African gold mining company Randgold Resources has told investors to expect a bonanza in production from its Kibali mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Speaking today in Kinshasa, Randgold’s chief executive Mark Bristow revealed the mine is likely to exceed its 2015 production target of 600,000 ounces of the precious metal.

Mr Bristow sounded positive on future investment in gold mining in the DR Congo saying: “We believe the north-eastern DRC holds a rich potential for such discoveries and we trust the country’s government will partner us in our drive to develop a major gold mining frontier there.”

Randgold’s shareholders and its CEO will be pleased to hear that the price of the precious metal remains buoyant, helped by recent stock market turmoil.

This afternoon in London the price of gold was fixed at £780 ($1086.25) an ounce.

In response to studies on lives lost to stillbirth across the world (see 09:25 post), the BBC’s Umaru Fofana in Sierra Leone sent in this photo of a section of cemetery on the outskirts of the capital, Freetown, reserved for babies.

He took the photo last month – and it shows that many of the graves are for stillborn babies. 

Eleven of the 20 countries that recorded the highest number of stillbirths in 2015 are in Africa.

Three people involved in last week's Islamist attack in Burkina Faso are still at large, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls has said.

The assault on a hotel in the capital, Ouagadougou, was claimed by al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

The death toll has risen to 30 after a French-Moroccan photographer died from her injuries.

“Apartheid may be history, but the racism that nurtured and sustained it continues to this day,” South Africa’s main opposition leader leader Mmusi Maimane said today.

His remarks, made at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, come after a number of racist posts by Democratic Alliance members on social media and ahead of crucial local government elections later this year.

He said it was no wonder many people were angry about racism:

Mr Maimane made a direct reference to the incident earlier this month when a DA member put a post on Facebook calling black people "monkeys", saying he knew the vast majority of white people did not think like her:

He said racists were not welcome in the party, adding “if you’re a racist and you are thinking of voting for the DA, please don’t. We are not the party for you”.

English Premier League side Everton have donated match-worn shirts and training gear to a football club which bears their name in Uganda, the UK's Liverpool Echo newspaper reports. 

"Now for the first time we can wear an actual Everton kit and it makes the boys feel very proud. It’s like a gift from God,” coach Ali Senkunda told the paper.

The club, which helps disadvantaged children from slums in the capital, Kampala, was renamed Everton Uganda in 2012.

A Kenyan man has been charged with publishing pictures alleged to be of Kenyan soldiers killed last week by al-Shabab militants in Somalia. 

Eddy Reuben Illah denied that he posted the photos on the messaging service WhatsApp.

Prosecutors said the images were likely to cause fear and alarm. 

Officials in Nairobi have not disclosed how many soldiers were killed in the raid on the African Union base outside the town of al-Adde on Friday.

Al-Shabab says it killed more than 100 Kenyans. 

The bodies of four soldiers killed in the fighting were repatriated on Monday night.

The proposed national unity government in Libya has 32 ministerial posts and was drawn up by the Presidency Council that was set up by rival politicians last month.

But even this nine-member body couldn’t put up a united front – as two of its members refused to back all the names.

At this stage, it appears as though it went ahead for the sake of meeting deadlines, and out of fear of losing political momentum.

The December deal to pave the way for a unity government has yet to be backed by either of the country’s two parliaments – not to mention gaining support of the many militias.

So it is unlikely that cabinet will be endorsed by the internationally recognised parliament, currently based in Tobruk – which is the next step in the process.

One Libyan aptly summarised the issue like this: “A selected cabinet with no cohesiveness might as well not bother turning up at the starting line.”

Some will argue that Libya’s security and economy are the “finishing line” and it cannot afford any delays.

But if deadlines come at the cost of creating further divisions, there will be even bigger problems to deal with.

A Kenyan teacher who was hailed as a hero when Muslims protected fellow Christian passengers during an al-Shabab attack on a bus, has died while undergoing surgery to treat his injuries, local media report.

Salah Farah, deputy head of the Mandera township primary school, was shot after he and others travelling with him refused demands by the Islamist militants for passengers to split into groups of Muslims and Christians. 

In previous attacks in the area, al-Shabab has executed Christians and spared Muslims. 

The bravery of the passengers, who reportedly defied the militants, saying: "Kill us all or leave them alone" drew global attention when news of the attack broke on December 21. 

Mr Farah's body has now been flown back to the north-eastern town of Mandera, Kenya's Standard newspaper reports, external.

He had been receiving treatment at a hospital in the Kenyan capital Nairobi. 

Mr Farah's brother Rashid told local The Star newspaper that he hoped his brother's death would help bring "religious harmony and encourage Kenyans to live in unity."

Speaking earlier, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta reiterated the government's commitment to fighting al-Shabab. 

Reigning champion Eliud Kipchoge will vie with two-time winner Wilson Kipsang for this year's London Marathon men's title.

Kipchoge, 31, beat his fellow Kenyan, 33, in a sprint finish in 2015.

Kenyan world-record holder Dennis Kimetto, third last year, is also confirmed for the event on 24 April.

Zambia beat neighbours Zimbabwe 1-0 in the opening game of Group D at the African Nations Championship (Chan) in the Rwandan city of Rubavu.

Isaac Chansa scored the only goal of the game in the 58th minute. 

He stretched to get on the end of a free-kick that was swung in over the top of the defence by his captain Christopher Katongo, who lifted the Africa Cup of Nations trophy in 2012. 

The second game in the group is at 16:00 GMT when Uganda play Mali. 

A popular Zambian singer, who was awarded a position as an ambassador against gender violence despite having a rape conviction, has been removed from the post. 

President Edgar Lungu said that Clifford Dimba, who is now on trial for a separate assault on a woman, could not fulfil his role as a spokesman against gender violence.

Dimba, known as General Kanene, was originally sentenced in 2014 to 18 years in prison for a previous crime - of raping a teenager - but he was pardoned by President Lungu after serving a year and given the ambassadorial role.

"It was my hope that Mr Dimba would use pardon and his special skills as a musician to campaign against gender-based violence using his anecdotal experience," the president said in a statement.

"However, I regret that he faces before the courts of law allegations of gender-based violence. This does not cast him in a good light to move the campaign forward."

The United Nations had described Dimba's initial appointment to the role as outrageous.

Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have signed six agreements, including one on the recovery and repatriation of stolen wealth.

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is in the UAE for the World Future Energy Summit.

He witnessed the agreements - on trade, finance and judicial matters – along with UAE Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Nigeria’s presidency said in a statement.

“At a reception after the signing of the agreements, President Buhari reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption and restoring Nigeria's dignity in the comity of nations,” it said.

Many wealthy Nigerians have homes and business interests in the UAE.

Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta says the country remains “unbowed and undeterred” in the fight against al-Shabab militants in Somalia. 

He made the speech this morning in Kenya’s Coastal region, saying Kenyans must stand with the families of the soldiers killed in a base in the southern Somali town of al-Adde on Friday.

It is not clear how many died in the attack by militant fighters (see 12.48 post).

The father of a Kenyan soldier missing in Somalia following the attack on an African Union base in al-Adde on Friday has made an appeal for information. 

The Islamist militant group al-Shabab says it has killed more than 100 soldiers and is holding 12 others hostage.

So far only four bodies have been brought back, as the Kenya military says it is continuing with a search and rescue operation.

He told the BBC Somali service that his son was deployed to Somalia, where Kenya contributes 4,000 troops to the AU force, two weeks ago.

The attack was the worst on Kenyan troops since they were deployed to southern Somalia in 2011.
