  2. 'The state of emergency ends then they target us': Harrogate woman on Nice attackspublished at 14:30 BST 15 July 2016

    President Hollande says France is in tears for the 84 people, including several children, who've been killed in an attack in Nice last night. 

    A fireworks display to mark Bastille Day had just ended when a heavy lorry ploughed into a crowd.

    It carried on for over a mile knocking down pedestrians.

    Katherine Bullock, a French language student from Harrogate, was living in Nice until two weeks ago.

    She says she's amazed at what's happened, after the country has been on such high alert for the European Football Championships.

  3. Australian batsman Travis Head takes to the field with Yorkshire Vikings in T20 Blast match tonightpublished at 14:10 BST 15 July 2016

    Australian batsman Travis Head is in the Yorkshire Vikings squad for tonight's T20 Blast match against Nottinghamshire Outlaws. 

    He replaces Gary Ballance who's away on England duty. 

    Head says he's happy to follow in the footsteps of Yorkshire legend and Australia coach Darren Lehmann.

    Heavy rain could fall this afternoon, but that should fragment and clear up towards the late afternoon and we should be in for a better evening, when we should get some late sunshine.

    Temperatures should be around 17C to 19C and it might feel a bit muggy and humid through the night.

    The family of Yorkshire MP Jo Cox say they're "overwhelmed and touched" by the love and support they've been shown since she was killed.

    Pupils from Jo Cox's old school, Heckmondwike Grammar, wore yellow ribbons today in memory of their former head girl.

    Floral tributes were left at the door of her constituency office in Batley and flowers were thrown by people lining the streets, as the funeral cortege passed through the town.

    The man on the left, dressed as Willy Wonka, is Tom Pearcy, he owns the York Maze and the lady on the right is Julie Dawn Cole, who played Veruca Salt in the 1971 film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

    I've been to the York Maze, where tomorrow the gates open for the first time this summer on their newest incarnation, which has been created to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of children's author Roald Dahl.

  9. Yorkshire Dales barns become homes for local peoplepublished at 11:49 BST 15 July 2016

    Some barns in the Yorkshire Dales National Park are to be converted into homes for local people after four schemes were given the thumbs up by planners.

    Among the barns being converted is a traditional agricultural barn being turned into a three-bedroomed, local home at Home Farm in West Witton.

    Permission was also given to convert the former Deepdale Methodist Chapel near Dent - pictured - into a local occupancy home.

    Harrogate Town goalkeeper Peter Crook has been offered a trial at a Premier League outfit,, external the non league club have confirmed.

    Reports had suggested Crook was being eyed up by new Leeds United boss Garry Monk and his former club Swansea City but those claims have been dismissed.

    The fallout from my programme on BBC Radio York in France on 1 July, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Somme continues.

    At the start of the week, we told this story of the medal belonging to a York soldier who'd fought in the First World War, that mysteriously tuned up in a load of turf in Reigate.

    And now there's been a development in my search for more information on my ancestor, Donald Cowap, whose grave I found in La Neuville cemetery.

    Dave Durham, from the Western Front Association in York, heard about my desire to find out more about him and got in touch.

    Dave's done some research about Donald and came to the studio to tell me more, bringing with him an amazing bound folder containing Donald's war record.

  13. Police track down child sex offender who fled to Cambodiapublished at 10:54 BST 15 July 2016

    A paedophile who'd gone on the run to Cambodia has been tracked down by North Yorkshire Police.

    39-year-old Damien Midgley didn't turn up to face child sex charges in York two years ago - he was convicted in his absence and given a six-year prison sentence.

    He is currently in custody in Cambodia and arrangements are being made by North Yorkshire Police, the National Crime Agency and the Cambodian authorities to have him deported to UK.

  14. Developer builds new homes in York in wrong placepublished at 10:37 BST 15 July 2016

    A housing association is facing a planning hurdle after building 55 new homes in the wrong place.

    Homes on Yorkshire Housing's Hob Stone site were built out of position by as little as 11cm, reports The York Press, external.

    The association must now apply for a Variation to a Condition order as the Acomb development does not match the plans approved by City of York Council.

    Yorkshire Housing said it was still working to ensure new residents could move in as soon as possible.

  15. Good news for shepherd's: A trio of North Yorkshire red sky delightspublished at 10:23 BST 15 July 2016

    North Yorkshire's shepherds should be basking in the afterglow of the good weather predicted by a red sky, if these three BBC Weather Watcher pics are anything to go by.

    BBC Look North Weatherman Paul Hudson tells me a "red sky appears when dust and small particles are trapped in the atmosphere by high pressure." This scatters blue light, leaving only red light to give the sky its burning appearance.

  16. John O'Neil named as man who must tell police of sex planspublished at 10:02 BST 15 July 2016

    A man who must notify police 24 hours before he has sex can be named, a district judge has ruled.

    John O'Neil, 45, from York, was cleared of rape at a retrial last year but was made the subject of an interim sexual risk order (SRO).

    An order prohibiting his identity from being made public has been lifted at York Magistrates Court.

    North Yorkshire Police has applied for the SRO to be made permanent after Mr O'Neil allegedly breached it.

    The single father-of-two has said he had an interest in sado-masochism and used to visit a fetish club.

    He said the order violated his human rights and meant he could not have an intimate relationship.

    A York man who traveled to Ukraine in search of a 'miracle cure' for his Parkinson's disease wants to warn other people not to waste their money. 

    James De Little travelled to Kiev two years ago to have stem cell treatment, but the result is far from what he was hoping for, or even expecting. 

    Claire Bale from the charity Parkinson's UK says the organisation discourages people with Parkinson's from travelling abroad for treatment because "good treatments are available in the UK."

    As the new Prime Minister Theresa May forms her government it's been announced that the government's new chief whip, whose job it is to keep the party in line, is from Scarborough.

    The appointment is a big step up for Gavin Williamson.

    David Cameron's former Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS), he also served as PPS to Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin.

    The 40-year-old Scarborian was elected MP for South Staffordshire in 2010. 

    As chief whip, he will attend Cabinet meetings.
